Company Description The College Sports Commission is the independent body responsible for overseeing the national system that facilitates revenue sharing in college sports. It ensures that name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreements between student-athletes and third parties are fair, transparent, and compliant with established rules. The Commission works closely with schools, athletes, and commercial partners to uphold integrity and equity in collegiate athletics. Its mission is to create a sustainable framework that protects student-athletes while supporting the evolving business landscape of college sports.

Role Description The Communications and Media Relations Manager is a full-time, on-site role based in Tysons Corner, Virginia. This position is responsible for developing and executing communications strategies that promote the Commission’s mission, decisions, and initiatives to media, stakeholders, and the public. Day-to-day responsibilities include drafting press materials, managing media inquiries, coordinating interviews, and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets. The manager will oversee messaging across channels, prepare leadership for public appearances, monitor coverage of college sports and NIL issues, and support crisis and issue management with clear, consistent communications. The role involves collaborating with internal teams to ensure all external communications align with regulatory objectives and organizational priorities.

Qualifications

  • Strong media relations skills, including managing press inquiries, building relationships with journalists, and coordinating media interviews.
  • Experience creating and distributing press releases and other news materials that clearly communicate complex regulatory or policy topics.
  • Proficiency in strategic communications, including planning and executing campaigns that support organizational goals and enhance public understanding.
  • Background in corporate communications and public relations, with the ability to maintain consistent messaging across multiple channels and audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical and regulatory information into accessible language.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in sports, higher education, government, or regulatory environments is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
