The Communications Director for Congressmember Brad Lander has oversight of the Member’s communications portfolio, including earned media, digital, video, new media, email/substack, op-eds, and speeches. They manage and oversee the office’s communications team while ensuring clear, consistent messaging implementation across platforms and across both the district and legislative priorities. 


NOTE: While we are seeking a Communications Director with skills and experience across “traditional” and “digital/new” media, we are open to hiring a Communications Director with skills/experience predominantly in one of those areas, working closely with a Deputy Communications Director with skills and experience predominantly in the other.


Specific Responsibilities:


Message development  

  • Develops, oversees, and implements media and communications strategy for the Member.
  • Monitors local, national, and digital media coverage to measure the overall effectiveness of the Member’s communications strategy and messaging.
  • Work in partnership with other Member’s offices or external stakeholders on message development and strategy for coalition policy and strategy efforts in which the Member is playing a leading role.


Earned media management 

  • Develops, oversees, and implements earned media strategy (potentially in consultation with Deputy Comms Director).
  • Builds and sustains (or oversees) strong relationships with local and national reporters, editors, columnists, producers and bookers.
  • Oversees the coordination of press events in the district and in DC. 
  • Oversees the response to incoming media inquiries. 
  • Serves as the formal on the record spokesperson and media liaison for the Member.


Digital media management 

  • Develops, oversees, and implements digital media strategy across platforms (potentially in consultation with Deputy Comms Director).
  • Oversees the ideation, creation, production, and dissemination of digital media across platforms (including video, social, email newsletter, podcast, substack, etc).
  • Builds and sustains (or oversees) strong relationships with new media outlets and content-creators, to help spread the Member’s message and communications strategy. 
  • Pitches collaborations, interviews, and coverage opportunities to new media outlets and creators both in DC and in the district to amplify the Member’s work at the national and local levels


Steward of the Member’s Voice

  • Drafts and edits speeches, press releases, media advisories, op- eds, digital content and Congressional Record statements to ensure that they reflect the Member’s voice and goals.
  • Oversees and implements the messaging and budget for the office’s mass communication efforts.
