Job Description
Congressman Ritchie Torres (NY-15) seeks a Communications Director to lead a
fast-paced press operation. Responsibilities include working closely with the legislative
and district staff to plan press events in D.C. and the district, handling daily media
inquiries, maintaining relationships with national and local reporters, writing talking
points and press releases, pitching op-eds, managing the website, producing social
media content, managing franked mail, and keeping press lists up to date. The ideal
applicant will have extremely strong writing skills and be a proactive individual who
does not require micromanagement.
Responsibilities Include:
● Develop and implement a strategic communications plan for the office.
● Build relationships with local, national, and beat reporters who cover areas of
interest to the Congressman.
● Engage with local TV markets, radio stations, and newspapers.
● Act as primary spokesperson for the Congressman.
● Book and prepare the Member for interviews and speaking engagements.
● Draft, produce, and edit video content of the Congressman.
● Write talking points, interview memos, press releases, op-eds, and more.
● Oversee digital communications outreach including newsletter, website, digital
advertisements, and social media accounts.
● Supervise Press Assistant and collaborate on digital and online content, to
maintain strategic messaging across official channels.
This is not an entry-level position. Candidates must have previous press-related
experience either on or off Capitol Hill, and fluency in Spanish is preferred.
