Job Description
Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03) seeks an innovative communications leader who can design, produce, and turn around products that respond to the moment. Ability to anticipate problems and offer solutions, and familiarity with Ohio and national news outlets are key. This position is based in D.C., with occasional travel to Columbus during District work periods, and reports to the Chief of Staff.
The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, is comfortable working under deadlines, is confident interacting with reporters, is highly collaborative and eager to work with staff, and has a passion for politics and video production.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and implements media, communications, public relations, and social media strategies;
- Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues;
- Proactively drafts remarks, talking points, and other content in the voice of the Congresswoman each day, in addition to quickly responding to breaking national and district-local news;
- Manages the Member’s official website;
- Drafts regular commentary and op-eds for news outlets on important subject matter and current events;
- Creates videos, graphics, and other digital content that is compelling, engaging, on-brand, and error-free;
- Develops and executes press conferences and public events;
- Oversees the creation and distribution of the Congresswoman’s newsletters and press releases, and produces franked communications;
- Maintains a good working relationship with the Congresswoman, staff, media, and constituents;
- Supervises and mentors press staff, interns, and district communications support;
- Works well under pressure and manages stress well;
- Accepts performance-based criticism and direction;
- Works a flexible schedule, including long hours, evenings and weekends when needed; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
This is not an entry level position. A bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of professional communications experience is required. District ties and a thorough understanding of the Columbus media landscape are preferred but not required.
Salary & Benefits:
Compensation is commensurate with experience, in line with House salary ranges. The office provides a robust benefits package. The position is eligible for transit benefits, student loan repayment assistance, and parking. This is an in-person position with remote work opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
- Strong communication skills;
- Understanding of local and national news outlets;
- Thorough knowledge of the legislative process, procedures and organization of the House; and
- Knowledge of video and graphic editing software and IQ
