Job Description
Congressman George Latimer (NY-16) seeks an experienced and creative Communications Director to lead our communications operation. Applicants should be strategic thinkers who are prepared to oversee all communications that advance the Congressman’s legislative and district priorities. They must also be detail-oriented with high-level writing skills and be prepared to manage a variety of assignments under tight deadlines.
This position is based in Washington, D.C. The role reports to the Chief of Staff and works closely with other senior-level staff. Previous Hill experience required. New York ties a plus.
Key responsibilities include:
- Work alongside the Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff/Legislative Director, and Senior Advisor on crafting and communicating the Congressman’s legislative and in-district priorities;
- Oversee and implement the messaging and budget for the office’s mass communication efforts, both paid and organic;
- Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the Congressman;
- Pitch and book national, state, and local press including, but not limited to, cable television, print, radio, and podcasts;
- Build relationships with key reporters in NY-16, NYC, and Washington D.C.;
- Oversee and execute digital media, remarks, talking points, press releases, and large-scale communications with community stakeholders and constituents;
- Write talking points, floor statements/speeches, committee statements/questions, newsletters, mailers, op-eds, press releases, and media advisories;
- Prepare the Member for media interviews, press conferences, public events, roundtables, and other speaking engagements; and
- Oversee the development of the office’s website and social media platforms.
The successful candidate will have:
- At least 3+ years of professional experience in political communications;
- Strong writing skills and speech writing experience;
- Familiarity with House franking and its rules;
- A history of providing traditional and digital media training and communications advice to a principal;
- The ability to effectively communicate in the voice of the principal;
- A track record of successfully creating and implementing communications strategies that span several forms of media;
- Proven experience in new media;
- Experience planning events and campaigns that generate news; and
- Ability to use Canva, SnapStream, Switchboard, Mailchimp or similar platforms.
