Locust Street Community is seeking experienced, highly motivated Community Organizers to support an outreach campaign in Philadelphia.

Ideal candidates are hard-working, self-motivated, and detail-oriented with an ability to hit metrics-based goals and build relationships with local communities and community leaders. Candidates should be excited and passionate about assisting income-constrained Philadelphians to gain access to available resources.

Community Organizers should be based in Philadelphia and will be expected to travel around the metro area to execute a field program, including door-to-door canvassing in target geographical areas, event planning and execution, community organizing, relationship building with community-based organizations, developing new connections, amplifying existing relationships, and broadening the reach of community assets.

The Community Organizer will play an essential role in the field program and will be expected to adapt to programmatic adjustments and resourcefully work with team members to overcome challenges of any form.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Contact local community members by phone and at doors
  • Actively assist households to determine eligibility and apply for benefits
  • Develop partnerships – and build on existing relationships - with local staffers, nonprofits, and organizations to help enroll community members in benefits program
  • Plan and execute creative and informational events in the community
  • Coordinate logistics including timing, materials, and location for dozens of events
  • Conduct person-to-person outreach in high traffic areas to promote interest in the program
  • Support other Community Organizers as needed in targeted areas
  • Organize inventory of materials necessary for outreach
  • Meet daily reporting and data entry deadlines
  • Meet strict weekly contact goals


Skills or Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with community landscape in the region
  • Language skills appropriate to working with a linguistically and culturally diverse team in comparably diverse communities – especially Spanish, Vietnamese and Chinese
  • Experience working for or volunteering on a political and/or field campaign
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Great interpersonal skills with the ability to listen well and communicate effectively in writing and verbally
  • Be a motivated self-starter with a commitment to the campaign’s goals
  • Good computer skills and demonstrate ability to track/report progress
  • Strong and passionate desire to help families and individuals maintain critically needed Internet services.
  • Willingness to travel around Philadelphia regularly, and work in different neighborhoods as needed
  • COVID-19 vaccinations and appropriate boosters required

This is a field-based position in Philadelphia.

Job Type: Full-time-equivalent, Independent Contractor

Payment: A competitive monthly rate will be provided commensurate with experience and qualifications.
