About the Position
Siembra NC seeks a rigorous Defense Coordinator to manage a team of volunteers that operate the organization’s Immigrant & Worker Defense Hotline. The Defense Coordinator is primarily responsible for training, scheduling, and recruiting hotline volunteers to respond to calls in real time, in addition to answering those calls when no volunteers are available. This position also requires following up with people experiencing detention and wage theft, and contributing to other defense strategies as needed. The position may evolve to coordinate other defense strategies, depending on volunteer participation and hotline call volume.
Responsibilities Include:
Hotline Management & Volunteer Coordination
- Oversee the full volunteer cycle: recruitment, training and onboarding, scheduling, debriefing, and troubleshooting with hotline volunteers
- Developing and empowering volunteers to take on leadership roles to support the operation of the hotline and other defense strategies
- Serve as lead operator on hotline shifts as needed
Quality Control & Data
- Oversee and ensure compliance with hotline volunteer and data protocols
- Conduct routine quality control spot checks on calls and texts to assess quality of work and propose ways to improve or adapt to changing conditions
- Give feedback as needed to hotline operators and related volunteers
- Create and maintain a report back schedule to ensure consistent reports of calls coming in, volunteer shifts being filled, and other agreed upon data necessary to inform our organizing work
- Maintain intake form and call incident data as needed
Analysis & Strategy Development
- Conduct trend analysis of calls, incidents, volunteers
- Participate in reviews of defense team programs and development of new strategies with members, volunteers and staff
Other Responsibilities
- Collaborate with communications team and other member, staff and volunteer teams to implement organizational strategies
- Conduct intakes and follow-up visits over phone, video, or in-person as necessary
- Update relevant resource referral lists
- During periods of higher intensity defense team activation, work closely with supervisor to adjust hotline protocols and volunteer team coordination
- Coordinate other defense projects and trainings as needed
- Maintain a weekly/monthly work plan
- Participate in supervision and other team meetings
- Complete timesheets, expense reports and use other administrative tools as necessary
Required Qualifications:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to stay calm and grounded during tough moments, including when exposed to personal stories of detention and worker exploitation
- Demonstrated commitment to Siembra's values and theory of change
- Demonstrated ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize projects and tasks appropriately
- Ability to use relevant technology (cell, laptop,, WhatsApp and other messaging platforms Google Docs)
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+years experience working in related fields or relevant volunteer experience
- Journalism background
- Experience with ActionNetwork or other contact management platforms
- Experience with Canva or other design software
Compensation and Benefits
Competitive salary range of $71,500–$76,500 depending on experience, with benefits, including fully employer-paid health insurance for staff and 100% coverage for dependents, paid time off (PTO), remote office set up, monthly stipend of $100 for phone and internet, and mileage reimbursement for travel. This position is full-time and based in North Carolina.
