Office Title: Director of Policy
Salary: $95,000-$110,000

The Office of the Brooklyn Borough President’s Policy unit focuses heavily on preserving the affordability and accessibility of the city for people of all backgrounds and income levels. The office is deeply invested in issues concerning economic recovery, affordable housing, health, education, and quality of life. The Office seeks a Director of Policy to lead a team responsible for working throughout the borough on initiatives related to youth and education, public health, transportation, economic and industrial development, parks, arts, housing, older adults, and LGBTQ equity. The Director will provide background research to the Borough President and make recommendations on new projects and/or policies to address current issues. The Director of Policy will also work with senior level staff to develop and disseminate new policy initiatives on behalf of the Borough President. The Director will report to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and will work closely with the legislative unit to present various policy issues to key stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a small team of policy professionals and direct the work of the department and staff’s individual workplans; manage the work of department fellows and interns.
- Manage the Office’s policy recommendation submissions and coordination of various policy initiative pipelines, including preparing in-depth policy reports based on self-directed research.
- Conduct public outreach for and issue updates to the Borough President’s policy priorities.
- Organizing and implementing special projects related to the office’s policy interests.
- Maintaining a working network of outside sources, including public interest advocates and government colleagues, to form policy research ideas and recommendations; organizing and leading collaborative workgroups.
- Maintaining familiarity with policy developments in the City and State related to maternal health, education, safety, food insecurity, and other planning policy related areas such as housing, transportation, and economic development.Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and eight (8) years of full-time experience in public policy, urban planning, community work, research, investigations, and/or studies related to public policy and development programs; or
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above. However, a baccalaureate degree is required of all candidates. Graduate work leading to an advanced degree in architecture, urban design, or city planning may be substituted for the one year of experience described above.
Preferred Skills:
- A minimum of two years of management experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of the Borough of Brooklyn and its communities.
- Excellent project management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong written, verbal, research, and presentation skills.
- Ability to take initiative and collaborate effectively with others. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing needs, utilizing sound judgment in decision making, and centering respect and accountability to internal and external partners.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and PowerPoint.
