Job Description

Full-time | Remote (Northern California/Bay Area)

ABOUT THE MILES HALL FOUNDATION

The Miles Hall Foundation (TMHF) is a Bay Area–based nonprofit dedicated to transforming mental health crisis response systems—shifting attention and resources away from punishment and toward care, dignity, and justice. Founded in memory of Miles Hall, TMHF works at the intersection of mental health, racial equity, and public safety to advocate for non-police crisis response; support impacted families; and drive systemic change through policy reform, advocacy and accountability, narrative change, and community engagement.

We are a values-driven organization grounded in lived experience, collective action, and the belief that humane, effective crisis response saves lives and strengthens communities. Real, lasting change is the work of the collective, not any one organization. We center those most impacted, build power through partnership, and turn advocacy into organizing, policy change, and direct solidarity with families navigating trauma and injustice.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Miles Hall Foundation (TMHF) is entering a new chapter, and we're looking for the leader who will help write it alongside us. What began as one family's determination to make sure no one else experienced what they did has grown into a real movement. In just a few years, TMHF has changed state law, helped stand up a nationally watched model for non-police crisis response, and become a trusted name for families across Contra Costa County and beyond. TMHF is now hiring its first Executive Director to lead the organization operationally while Founder Taun Hall shifts focus to telling Miles' story, TMHF's mission and public voice, and the organization's highest-level advocacy work.

We're looking for a community-rooted, systems-minded connector; someone as comfortable with an impacted family as with a county official or a funder. They'll be building upon:

  • Real policy wins — TMHF helped pass California's AB 988, the Miles Hall Lifeline Act, helped build A3: the Miles Hall Crisis Hub, Contra Costa County's non-police crisis response system, and continues to shape California's statewide 988 crisis network.
  • Deep, lasting trust — and a proven track record and a growing circle of support with families, funders, and community partners across the Bay Area.
  • Decision-making authority — over staffing, budget, programs, and operations, with the opportunity to shape the team and infrastructure that carries this work into its next decade.
  • A warm, genuine partnership — with the Hall family, who remain closely engaged in the mission and are excited to welcome a new leader into this work.

We strongly encourage candidates passionate about this mission to apply!

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Strategy & Impact

  • Set programmatic priorities and success metrics across TMHF's four strategic pillars — non-police crisis response, systems reform and public accountability, narrative change and public mobilization, and solidarity with impacted families — evolving programs as community needs and opportunities change
  • Lead TMHF's narrative change and community organizing work, mobilizing the public and equipping people with the tools to shift how mental illness and crisis response are understood
  • Delegate and supervise staff and consultants in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs, and be accountable for outcomes

Leadership & Management

  • Uphold and nurture TMHF's internal culture through leadership that embodies the organization's values: connection, centering marginalized voices, collective action, and long-term sustainability
  • Hire, supervise, and support future senior staff members — including future Program and Development Directors as those roles are added — plus TMHF's consultants and contractors
  • Establish performance management and coaching systems (regular check-ins, written reviews, a real onboarding process) and own staff hiring, development, and retention
  • Partner closely with Founder Taun Hall and the board on culture, vision, and key leadership decisions

Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Collaborate with future Director of Development and board fundraising committee to lead overall fundraising strategy across TMHF's current mix of grants, corporate sponsorships, events, and individual donors, and be accountable for hitting organizational revenue goals
  • Work with the new Director to set revenue targets and build the systems (donor pipeline, cultivation strategy, and stronger use of donor data) needed to support a more proactive major-gifts program and other diversified revenue streams

External Leadership & Representation

  • In conjunction with Taun Hall, serve as TMHF's public representative at community events, with media, and at conferences and convenings; work in close, direct partnership with Taun on public positioning and storytelling
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with Contra Costa County and state officials, fellow advocacy organizations, and other community partners
  • Advance TMHF's thought leadership on non-police crisis response and racial equity in mental health through public speaking, messaging, and media engagement

Operations & Infrastructure

  • Oversee and optimize day-to-day operations, financial management, and administrative systems such as bookkeeping, grant tracking, and HR
  • Maintain effective systems for budgeting, grant and funder compliance, and board financial reporting including proper records to support annual audits, tax filings, and funder reporting deadlines

Board Partnership

  • Support the board in its governance role, strategic planning, and board member recruitment as TMHF expands and strengthens its governance and leadership structure
  • Ensure transparency, accountability, and strong communication with the board through regular updates on programs, finances, and fundraising

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

We strongly encourage candidates who are passionate about TMHF's mission and excited to help lead this next chapter to apply, even if they don't meet every qualification listed below.

  • 8–10+ years of progressive nonprofit leadership experience, ideally as an Executive Director, Deputy Director, COO, CDO or similar at a mission-driven organization
  • Demonstrated experience and/or strong affinity for building organizational infrastructure, funding, and a team to scale
  • Strong program development and project management skills: proven ability to turn ideas and opportunities into plans with timelines, budgets, and measurable outcomes
  • Genuine enthusiasm for fundraising as a core responsibility of this role, particularly before a Director of Development is hired, including building donor relationships, making asks, and understanding what it takes to sustain an organization financially
  • Demonstrated coalition and partnership-building across government, advocacy, and community sectors
  • High emotional intelligence and a direct communication style, with genuine comfort partnering closely with a founder who remains engaged in the mission

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Passion for policy advocacy, behavioral health, criminal justice reform, or racial equity work; previous experience navigating state or county-level policy highly valued
  • Existing relationships or familiarity with Contra Costa County, the East Bay, and/or California's mental health and crisis-response policy landscape
  • Based in or willing to be regularly present in Contra Costa County (anticipated at least 2-5 in-person days per month); candidates based in Northern California with strong regional roots will also be considered.

OUR TEAM: CULTURE AND BENEFITS

This is a full-time, remote position with ongoing in-person events. TMHF asks that the Executive Director be able to travel into Contra Costa County for in-person work and relationship building.

TMHF operates as a small, lean organization by design, built around strong partnerships rather than a large in-house staff. The Executive Director will be supported initially by fractional staff and have the opportunity to build their team over time. Founder Taun Hall will remain closely involved in transferring relationships, history, and context. TMHF also currently works with a small group of trusted consultants and advisors across programs, communications, governance, and advocacy.

The budgeted salary for this role is $125,000-140,000. Benefits include a monthly wellness stipend, a 401(k) plan available upon hire, and unlimited PTO.
