POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Managing Director of Talent Operations plays a key role in ensuring that KIPP DC meets its strategic priority to invest in talent, while also ensuring that key functional operations are effective and efficient. The Managing Director oversees the teams that lead benefits administration, compensation, compliance, talent systems, returning offer letters, and HR customer service. The Managing Director of Talent Operations is an exempt position reporting directly to the Chief of Talent and directly managing the human resources and talent operations teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Managing Director of Talent Operations will be responsible for the following scope of work:
Lead the HR and Talent Operations Team
- Lead the Human Resources and Talent Operations Teams to maintain effective systems and consistently improve new and changing systems, in pursuit of our organizational goal of getting and keeping top talent
- Create a vision for excellence, setting goals, and holding team members accountable
- Support team members growth and development, and specifically train team members on talent functions and identify continued professional development areas for team members
- Manages HR and talent operations team budgets, including managing vendors, tracking invoices and spending
Oversee HR and Talent Operations Workstreams
- Talent systems: Support team that manages KIPP DC’s talent systems, including Workday (KIPP DC’s HR Information System), Offer Letter Tool, Position Control, and other new systems that are created. Collaborates with the Information Team and Development Operations team on integrations from Workday to other systems.
- Talent data review: Supports the organization in regularly reviewing talent data in an effort to ensure talent systems are implemented equitably and using the data to support strategic decisions and investments, including:
- Annual review of demographic changes across all KIPP DC roles
- Annual review of hiring, promotions and retention data
- Review of specific talent systems as necessary, such as review of hiring portfolios and school leader pipelines.
- Compensation: Oversees current compensation review, and then after compensation guidelines for all KIPP DC positions are set, ensures that implementation of all compensation guidelines are consistently and equitably implemented across the year, including:
- Training new talent team members on compensation guidelines
- Training new managers on compensation programs at KIPP DC
- Regular review of data to ensure there are no gaps across demographic areas
- Regularly reviews additional payment policies to ensure they are competitive, clear and accurately distributed
- Leave and Benefits Administration: Supports team that manages all KIPP DC benefits, including medical, dental, retirement, and other benefits. Also supports the team that manages leave administration in line with KIPP DC policies. Ensures benefits are clearly accessible and communicated to new employees and candidates.
- HR Compliance and Customer Service: Supports the team that manages all compliance and customer service focused work, including onboarding new team members, background checks, offboarding, managing changes to employee data, and answering questions in the HR inbox and other mechanisms.
- Returning Offer Letters: Ensures that returning offer letters are delivered in a way that supports retention of top talent. Collaborates with school teams on the process, and ensures offers are accurate and timely.
- Coverage Programs: Support team members that ensure coverage for school-based roles through managing substitute programs and partners. Communicate with school leaders to ensure coverage fits the schools’ needs and manage vendors to ensure KIPP DC’s interests are being met.
Collaborates with other Leaders and Teams
- Talent leaders: on talent processes and policies, including compensation, returning offer letters, promotions, retention strategies, performance reviews, and more.
- School leaders and academic leaders: on talent policies and practices to ensure they support getting and retaining top talent.
- Information team members: on talent systems.
- Finance team: on regular payroll cycles, payroll projects, benefits updates, and communications about non-exempt staff and time entry.
- Legal team: around employee issues, employee policies, and other legal matters.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree (Required), masters (Preferred)
- At least 10 years of experience in K-12 systems, with experience in HR and Talent Operations preferred
- Experience managing teams
- Dedication to KIPP DC’s mission
- Organized and detailed oriented
- Team player and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
- Experience in Workday preferred
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision‐making
