POSITION SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE:
The Manager of Media & Public Affairs works with the Vice President – Strategic Communications & Outreach to develop and conduct media and community relations as well as communications activities on behalf of Space Foundation. Primary duties include researching, writing and posting press releases, news briefs, media alerts and web articles; responding to media queries and developing relationships with key media outlets; tracking media coverage; contributing to the company’s social media portfolio and related content; serving as a media contact; coordinating public relations events, such as press conferences; managing the media center, photography and multimedia for the annual Space Symposium; and serving as public relations lead for Space Foundation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following briefly describes the potential scope of representative responsibilities for this job, but it is not intended to be a complete or all-inclusive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of this position:
Serves as the primary Colorado Springs public affairs contact for Space Foundation;
Establishes and maintains relationships with key media and community contacts with space-related organizations, government and industry;
Serves as an editor for various Space Foundation products, press releases and related public engagement materials;
Contributes to social media strategies, execution and growth of Space Foundation’s social presence on all of its platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube etc.);
Facilitates and hosts podcasts, live stream events, and panel discussions with industry leaders on current and emerging topics;
Manages the media center at Space Foundation events, including preparing schedules and documents, as well as overseeing support personnel and volunteers;
Plans and implements media events, such as news conferences and media interviews;
Collaborate cross-functionally with the Space Foundation’s marketing, communications, Web/IT and production teams to develop and launch campaigns
Manages and supports communications team with Space Foundation press releases and media-related web postings;
Works with internal team members to raise awareness of Space Foundation programs and initiatives including Space Certification and Space Technology Hall of Fame programs; space-inspired curriculum and teacher professional training education programs; Space Foundation Discovery Center; Space Symposium and any other events sponsored by Space Foundation; research and analysis programs, including The Space Report, white papers and events;
Assists the Vice President – Strategic Communications & Outreach in developing messages that help achieve Space Foundation goals;
As required, assists the Vice President - Strategic Communications & Outreach in writing materials, such as feature articles for trade publications, news releases, fact sheets, blog posts, media statements, op-eds and letters to the editor;
Performs other duties as assigned.
COMPETENCIES:
The following briefly describes knowledge, skills, abilities and characteristics associated with this position, including any required experience, education, licensure, certification or combination thereof:
BS/BA in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing or similar field;
Strong writing and editing skills, interest and/or experience in working with print, broadcast and interactive/multimedia;
Experience moderating and facilitating live and virtual panel discussions, podcasts and interviews;
Attention to detail;
Ability to work in a team environment and enthusiasm for space;
Proficiency in working autonomously, under tight and changing deadlines;
Working knowledge of website editing;
Possessing personal contacts with key Colorado Springs/regional community stakeholders, members of the media, space community, ; and,
Understanding of media/public engagement processes, as well as the legislative process and those activities that could impact the public’s perception and appreciation of the space community and role and reputation of Space Foundation.

Individuals in this position will generally work indoors and will have a workspace designated solely for him/her. Necessary office furnishings, equipment and supplies will be provided by the Foundation. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may periodically be required to work outdoors and would be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The employee may periodically be required to work in an offsite environment or at special events, and from time-to-time may be asked to travel on Foundation business, at the Foundation’s expense. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
JOB STATUS:
FLSA Classification: This position is exempt according to guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act and, as such, an individual in this position is not eligible to receive overtime pay.
Full- or Part-Time: This position is full-time in nature. An individual in this position will regularly work a schedule consisting of 40 hours per week.|
Work Location: This position’s primary work site is the headquarters location in Colorado Springs, Colo. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is not eligible for alternative worksite arrangements, such as working from home or telecommuting, on a consistent or recurring basis.
Regular Schedule: Usual business days are Monday through Friday, holidays excepted, and usual business hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in the time zone in which the position is located. The nature and responsibilities of this position are such that it is not eligible for flexible work scheduling, such as 4-day workweek or alternate start/end times, on a consistent or recurring basis.
