Job Description

The mission of the Chevy Chase Historical Society is to collect, record, interpret and share materials relating to the history of Chevy Chase, Maryland, one of America’s first streetcar suburbs. The organization provides resources for historical research and sponsors a variety of programs and activities to foster knowledge and appreciation of the community’s history.

CCHS interns will preserve, catalog, and maintain the collection of maps, photographs, documents, artifacts, and books that are housed in the Historical Society’s Archive and Research Center at 8401 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 1010, Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815.

Archives Internship Description


The intern will work closely with the Director to gain hands-on experience in a variety of archival tasks, including:


  • Research: Assist the Director with ongoing research projects related to the archive’s collections.
  • Cataloging: Accession, arrange, describe, and digitize new and existing materials using PastPerfect museum collection software. Training will be provided to update and maintain database records according to the CCHS collection plan.
  • Additional Responsibilities: These may include updating website content, assisting visitors with research, conducting oral histories, and contributing to the CCHS newsletter.

Required Skills


  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program.
  • Demonstrated experience in historical research and writing.
  • Interest in local history and/or American history.
  • Highly organized with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong oral communication skills.


Preferred Skills


Not required but an advantage:


  • Interest in social history and/or architectural history.
  • Knowledge of basic collections care and archival practices.
  • Familiarity with PastPerfect software.

Internship Compensation & Duration


  • $20 per hour.
  • February – May 2025
  • 10 hours per week to be served during regular office hours (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

The Center is accessible via public transportation using the L8 Metrobus. There is a parking lot on site. The Center is wheelchair accessible.
