Job Description

Commonwealth School seeks a part-time debate coach, beginning September 2022 and running through May. 

Responsibilities will include running weekly (two-hour) practices during the school year with members of the team, coaching all levels from novice to advanced, and oversight of the team’s participation in local debate tournaments. The coach will coordinate closely with the faculty debate advisor who will help with organizing logistics, recruitment of parent chaperones, and transportation. The number of tournaments depends on the interest and enthusiasm of the team but will likely range from four to six. The time commitment will thus entail two hours per week on a Tuesday or Thursday, and four to six weekend days over the course of the year for tournaments. If there is sufficient interest, participation in a larger regional tournament may be arranged.

The debate coach functions with a significant degree of autonomy, while working closely with the faculty debate advisor to handle logistics. 

Requirements

  • Experience participating in debate at a high level
  • Some experience coaching or teaching debate
  • Demonstrated interest in working with talented high-school students

Compensation 

$40/hour
