We have an immediate need for a Policy Analyst to support the firm’s government relations (GR) team in our Sacramento, CA office.
Responsibilities include tracking and analyzing legislation, covering hearings, and conducting issue-based research to support successful client outcomes across legislative, regulatory, and local government matters.
We are seeking a proven self-starter who demonstrates strategic and critical thinking, the ability to anticipate needs, and a commitment to delivering proactive, high level client service to both clients and senior staff. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage effectively with clients and government officials in a mature, professional manner. Successful candidates will exhibit a solid understanding of the current political landscape, exceptional written communication and organizational skills, and strong research and analytical capabilities with close attention to detail. This role requires the ability to work independently while excelling in a fast paced, collaborative, team-oriented environment.
The candidate selected for this position may also be asked to take responsibility for other duties that fall outside of the essential job functions, listed below.
Essential Job Duties:
- Proactively monitor, track, and report legislative, regulatory, and broader policy and political developments to senior team members and clients
- Provide coverage of state legislative and regulatory hearings as needed to meet client needs
- Produce a variety of written communications for internal and external audiences, with a focus on timely, succinct legislative and regulatory hearing summaries that distill critical information under tight deadlines. Additional assignments may include weekly policy development briefs/research memos for clients on topics ranging from legislation and political races to policy developments and regulatory updates, etc.
- Participate in regular calls with clients and, as needed, provide the client real-time updates and/or prepare background materials for the team members who represent the client
- Maintain relationships and coordinate meetings/logistics for clients with state legislators, government agencies, or with third party groups
- Candidate will eventually be asked to take greater responsibility for coordinating and leading Brownstein policy team meetings and organizing the team’s engagement efforts on behalf of clients
- Perform other research and duties as required
Required and Preferred Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of work experience, including at least 1 year of government or agency experience or relevant private sector experience and exceptional writing skills are required
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- Experience working with state legislatures, state government agencies , political campaigns, advocacy and lobbying, and/or policy research and analysis
- Strong computer and research skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities
- Ability to engage clients and government officials in a mature, professional manner
Compensation and Benefits: Brownstein offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k + match, profit sharing, and vacation/sick/personal time off. In addition, this role pays overtime for hours worked above 40 per week. We are offering a salary for this role in the range of $70,000 - $75,000. The actual salary is determined by the assigned level and corresponding experience, in accordance with our established salary steps.
