Job Description: Press Secretary

Rep. Eric Sorensen seeks a creative, detail-oriented, and experienced Press Secretary to join his Congressional office in Illinois' 17th Congressional District.

Applicants will be working directly with a Member of Congress who has a background in broadcast communications and a keen eye for effective strategy and tactics. Strong candidates will prefer working in fast-paced, collaborative working environments and possess strong political instincts, excellent writing and digital media skills. This communications team member will report to the Communications Director.

The position will be based in Illinois' 17th Congressional District. Candidates should be comfortable working individually on projects and with teams in multiple locations, possess strong writing and organizational skills, and have a strong attention to detail.

This is not an entry-level position. The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of previous communications or other political/media experience. Illinois ties strongly preferred.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work collaboratively with the Communications Director to develop a comprehensive, District-based communications strategy to achieve the Member’s legislative and communications priorities. 
  • Work with the team to build, manage, and execute press events, including in-person and virtual press conferences, tele-townhalls, earned media events, and press interviews.
  • Draft remarks, including talking points for the Congressman and team members, memo writing, press releases and advisories, and scripts for short- and long-form videos.
  • Collaborate actively with the legislative and District teams to ensure cohesive messaging on constituent services, policy rollouts, and district events.
  • Establish and develop productive relationships with in-district and Illinois reporters to successfully pitch and field stories, including supporting the team with rapid response as needed.
  • Work in collaboration with senior communications team members in Washington, D.C. on digital content, including drafting, editing, graphics, and videos for social media channels and the website.

Qualifications Include:

  • Two to three years of communications experience.
  • Demonstrated record of establishing and maintaining relationships with the press.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-visibility office.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required to support the Member's objectives.
