Program Assistant (PA) Internship - UNA-NCA Growth Initiatives

The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) is accepting applications for a Program Assistant opening with its Growth Initiatives team. This 3-month position (late August/early September to mid-December) offers an excellent opportunity for a highly organized, enterprising individual to participate in cross-functional project management at a DC-based non-profit. The Growth Initiatives team leads a diverse portfolio focused upon enhancing the organization’s operational, financial, and programmatic foundations.

UNA-NCA is not a division of the United Nations; we are an independent 501(c)(3) that works in partnership with UN agencies, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA), and over 60 partners in the Washington metropolitan region.


Position Overview

10-32 hours/week

The Program Assistant will experience working in a small, non-profit environment, while gaining exposure to a variety of development, fundraising, and project management responsibilities. Program Assistants will work closely with UNA-NCA’s President, the Vice Chair for Development, Program Leadership, and UNA-NCA’s Growth Initiatives Manager.

The PA position is a part-time, unpaid internship opportunity available to current and recent graduate students in the Washington metropolitan region. UNA-NCA remains flexible as to in-person (if vaccinated) or remote work. The organization will update its guidance for staff in accordance with DC's health and safety regulations.


Position Responsibilities

Institutional and Individual Giving (25%)

  • Participate in the development and implementation of outreach campaigns to prospective individual and institutional donors
  • Assist with the planning and management of donor acknowledgement and appreciation events
  • Prepare acknowledgement letters and other correspondence

Program & Committee Support (25%)

  • Collaborate with program staff on implementing communication, sponsorship development, and fundraising strategies
  • Work with UNA-NCA’s Development Committee to leverage the UNA-NCA network, conduct outreach, and jointly execute upon deliverables
  • Assist Vice Chair of Development with Development Committee meeting preparation, notes, and follow-up tasks

Grants (25%)

  • Assist with grant writing, editing, and submission
  • Participate in meetings with grantors
  • Conduct research on funding opportunities and develop application timelines

Communications (15%)

  • Assist in the creation of Growth Initiatives’ monthly newsletter
  • Assist in drafting appeal letters
  • Act as a liaison between prospective sponsors, grantors, and UNA-NCA staff 

Database Management (10%)

  • Assist with managing all aspects of eTapestry, UNA-NCA’s donor management software
  • Create and analyze fundraising reports


Qualifications

  • Highly organized, with exceptional attention to detail; able to maintain follow-through on multiple overlapping action items
  • Enterprising – excited by opportunities to design and implement solutions to complex challenges
  • Willing to ask questions, be assertive, and voice opinions while also remaining open to constructive criticism
  • Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team with minimal supervision while maintaining a proactive, collaborative outlook
  • Proficient with, or willing to learn: Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, Asana, eTapestry, Slack, and Zoom
