DUTIES
This position is located in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. The successful applicant will join a Press Office team that is the public information arm for an office of federal prosecutors and civil lawyers engaged in a wide range of sophisticated federal criminal and civil casework, including public corruption, terrorism, violent crime, financial fraud, and civil rights. As a Public Affairs Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Southern District of New York your duties include but are not limited to:
- Organizing and coordinating news media interviews and press conferences for the United States Attorney's Office, including media events involving multi-agency case announcements.
- Establishing and maintaining contacts with Federal, state, and local law enforcement organizations and agencies, civil rights groups, and other community interest groups.
- Drafting material to provide to the news media and law enforcement community, such as press releases, feature stories, background information, data compilations, biographical material, and articles on office program commitments and priorities.
- Responding to general inquiries from news media and the general public on United States Attorney's Office matters.
- Maintaining an updated Internet site and manage the District's Social Media Accounts (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linkedin etc.).
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.
QUALIFICATIONS
To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience, Education, or a Combination of Experience and Education.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-05 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is defined as responding to basic press inquiries; assisting staff members with creating and disseminating materials for press conferences; and updating social media accounts.
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Journalism); OR, possess a bachelor's degree or expect to complete the requirements for a bachelor's degree within the next 9 months AND meet one of the superior academic achievement provisions: class standing in the upper third of the graduating class; an overall GPA of 3.0 or at least a 3.0 based on courses completed during the final two years of your curriculum; a GPA of at least 3.5 based on the average of required courses completed in your major field of study or based on the average of required courses completed during the final two years of your curriculum; or election to membership on a national scholastic honor society.
Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above, which when combined equals 100 percent of the total requirements.
To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience, Education, or a Combination of Experience and Education.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-07 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is defined as developing news releases, briefing news media representatives, assisting with the preparation of written material for dissemination, e.g., press releases, website content, newsletters, speeches; establishing working relationships with the general public, government entities, or community organizations; and publishing developed content on social media platforms and websites.
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.), or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a related field (e.g., Communications, Journalism). Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate level education may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of one full year.
To be eligible at the GS-11 level, you must meet ONE of the following conditions: Specialized Experience, Education, or a Combination of Experience and Education.
Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the work at the GS-09 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is defined as arranging press conferences with representatives of local media; developing news releases, briefing news media representatives, and preparing written material for dissemination, e.g., press releases, website content, newsletters, speeches; establishing and maintaining working relationships with the general public, government entities, or community organizations; and publishing developed content on social media platforms and websites.
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a closely related field (e.g., Communications, Journalism), or LL.M, if related. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position.
Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of two full years.
