The mission of Jesuit Refugee Service/USA (JRS/USA) is to accompany, serve, and advocate for refugees and forcibly displaced persons. JRS works in more than 50 countries worldwide to meet the educational, health, psycho-social and emergency needs of almost 1 million refugees and other forcibly displaced persons, regardless of race, ethnic origin, or religious beliefs.
Job Description
Reporting to the Vice President for Advocacy, Research, and Partnerships, the Senior Advocacy Officer will play a lead role in JRS/USA’s efforts to educate policymakers in Washington, DC on its work and priorities in the field of refugee protection, asylum, legal immigration, and other issues. It will work with the JRS\USA leadership team on events, meetings, briefing documents, policy analysis, publications, and research on U.S. domestic and international work with refugees and other displaced persons.
Responsibilities
· Assist in the planning, development, coordination, and implementation of JRS/USA’s advocacy priorities on domestic and international refugee issues.
· Monitor and analyze legislation and policy changes related to JRS/USA policy priorities.
· Develop policy recommendations, organizational position statements/papers, action alerts, and other materials as necessary.
· Collect information and testimonials from JRS/USA’s domestic and international programs.
· Establish and maintain effective working relationships with key policymakers, their staff and governmental agencies.
· Participate in relevant coalition meetings and conduct outreach to partner organizations to facilitate collaborative opportunities.
· Coordinate closely with JRS country and regional offices, as appropriate.
· Help organize periodic events and mobilization opportunities and represent JRS/USA at events and speaking engagements.
· Provide logistical and planning support for JRS/USA’s annual Advocacy Day, including serving as lead on scheduling all meetings with Congressional offices.
Qualifications
· Proven ability to organize and significantly grow support for JRS/USA’s policy position and work.
· Master’s degree (preferred) in international relations, public policy, or another relevant field.
· At least 5 years of experience in the field of government relations or advocacy.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
· Interest in and willingness to travel.
· Experience with international migration, refugee and asylum issues and programs a plus.
· Strong public speaking and excellent written communication skills
Data entry, Microsoft Office suite, PowerPoint, and social media skills.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
