Job Description
Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is the premier grassroots organization focused on advocating solutions to the country’s greatest challenges. We recognize that tens of millions of Americans are frustrated with the extreme partisanship in government that keeps common-sense reforms from being passed, and instead seek to stand with policy leaders who are committed to finding a better way.
Americans for Prosperity is part of the Stand Together philanthropic community.
As a Senior Federal Lobbyist (internal title: Senior Federal Legislative Liaison), you will serve as a principal advocate for AFP’s positions in Washington, D.C., working with the Director of Federal Affairs to shape and execute our federal legislative strategy. Your goal: break down the barriers that stand in the way of people realizing their full potential.
You will focus on federal legislative advocacy in several policy areas but economics, energy, and AI and emerging technology or donor disclosure laws are particularly valuable areas of expertise.
This role is ideal for an accomplished federal lobbyist with a deep Capitol Hill network and a record of moving policy. You will lead advocacy on AFP’s priority issues, represent the organization before Congress, federal agencies, and the executive branch, and guide coalitions and junior team members. You should share our commitment to advancing every individual’s right to economic opportunity through free markets.
How You Will Contribute
- Lead AFP’s federal legislative advocacy on economics, energy, and AI and emerging technology, setting strategy and priorities with the Director of Federal Affairs
- Cultivate and leverage senior-level relationships with members of Congress, chiefs of staff, committee leadership, and federal agency and executive branch officials
- Represent AFP before Congress, federal agencies, and external audiences, including through testimony and formal comments
- Develop and execute multi-front legislative and regulatory campaigns, from bill introduction through enactment
- Anticipate legislative and regulatory trends, and advise leadership on risks, opportunities, and strategic responses
- Build and lead coalitions with trade associations, think tanks, and allied organizations to advance shared policy objectives
- Oversee the development of position papers, testimony, fact sheets, and other advocacy materials
- Partner with the policy, legal, communications, and research teams to align advocacy with organizational priorities
- Mentor and guide federal legislative liaisons and other government affairs team members
What You Will Bring
- 8+ years of legislative or government affairs experience, including significant federal lobbying or Capitol Hill experience
- Proven track record of developing and executing government affairs strategies that produced legislative or regulatory results
- Established relationships and credibility with members of Congress, senior congressional staff, and federal agency officials
- Demonstrated experience representing an organization before Congress, federal agencies, and executive branch officials
- Deep knowledge of the federal legislative and regulatory process, with substantive expertise in economic, energy, or technology policy
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including testifying and presenting to senior policymakers
- Sound strategic judgment and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Stand Out Candidates Will Also Bring
- Expertise in donor disclosure and donor privacy policy, including legislative and regulatory issues affecting nonprofit organizations
- Experience leading coalitions or managing outside lobbying partners
- Experience mentoring or managing government affairs professionals
- Deep knowledge of energy policy, AI policy, or emerging technology regulation
- Experience with lobbying disclosure compliance and registration requirements
- Enthusiasm for Stand Together’s vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect
