JOB PURPOSE:

The Senior Program Director for the Center of American Political Institutions will provide strategic leadership and direction for the administrative and programmatic functions of the newly founded Center for the Revitalization of American Political Institutions (hereafter the Center). The Senior Program Director will report to the Senior Fellow directing the Center and needs to be able to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision. These responsibilities include (but are not limited to) public relations management, directing administrative activities, and communications outreach for both the Center and Senior Fellow directing the Center. This role requires an ability to interface with Hoover senior fellows and Stanford faculty, staff of all levels, students, high-ranking public officials, and other visitors to Hoover. Discretion, an ability to multi-task, and enthusiasm about programs on US politics are a must.


The position will be responsible for three major activities but will include other duties as assigned: (1) facilitating the activities of individuals contributing to the Center’s programs that may include conferences, publications, visits to the Stanford campus and Hoover’s Washington office, and educational programming; (2) communications, writing, and editorial work in support of projects undertaken by the Center; (3) disseminating communications in coordination with other Hoover staff in areas of strategic outreach and media relations.


This is a hybrid role based in Stanford, CA. Hybrid at Hoover is onsite Tues/Wed and one other day per week for a total expected onsite of three days per week.


CORE DUTIES*:

  • Develop and direct strategic plans for organization or program(s) managed. May develop multi-year business plans. Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning beyond the immediate unit, consult and advise senior leadership. Make decisions that establish objectives for the overall direction/operation of a significant organization. Oversee allocation of all resources.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the organizational structure and programs to ensure success, development of employees and appropriate use of staff resources.
  • Responsible for the financial planning and success of the organization, including long term planning.
  • Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization. Responsible for professional development of staff and accountable for the performance of direct reports.
  • Advise senior management on programmatic and policy development. May provide input to university leadership on institutional administrative policies and guidelines.


ADDITIONAL CORE DUTIES*:

  • Execute and manage all aspects of meetings, workshops, and conferences for the Center that may include pre-existing research groups and projects. This will include working closely with the Senior Fellow directing the Center, special events team, and participating scholars and guest speakers, both in the U.S. and internationally.
  • Assist with the coordination of marketing and communications efforts in relation to the output and productivity of the Center. Will include working closely with members of the Hoover Press and the Communications and Marketing teams.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience in administrative and financial management, or combination of education and relevant experience.


Experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, planning and change management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to influence people, solve problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts.
  • Advanced financial expertise in budget planning, and financial forecasting.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Experience with and basic knowledge of skills in the production and management of podcasts, social media, websites, and publishing platforms.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds;
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.

The expected pay range for this position is $179,000 to $233,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
