Job Description
Are you someone that prizes supporting those that are working at the intersection of solving humanity’s biggest challenges? Do you find the idea of working at an organization that focuses on a single issue restrictive and your mind and your experience is yearning to expand? Do you like an intellectual challenge? Are you curious about the world?
DEY. is an agency that amplifies big ideas about humanity’s biggest challenges: climate, science, global health, AI, foreign policy, philanthropy—and the books that shape how people think about all of them.
Our breadth is intentional, and so is our selectivity. For a message to break through, you have to find the overlap where what a client needs to say meets what the world is primed to hear, and understand exactly whom you need to reach. And, why.
We are thought partners and strategists to our clients. We are thinkers ourselves. And yes, we execute: the pitch, the placement, the op-ed, the launch. We work with leading institutions including Stanford University, MIT, the Gates Foundation, the World Bank; with historians such as Yuval Noah Harari; with AI pioneers such as Dr. Fei-Fei Li and Eliezer Yudkowsky; with Nobel laureates Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee; and with nonfiction authors whose books shape the public conversation. Everyone at DEY., at every level, works directly with clients of this caliber.
We are looking for someone who is genuinely curious about the world. Someone who reads widely, argues thoughtfully, and can move from a conversation about AI governance to one about a new work of history without missing a beat. Someone who is a little tired of hearing the same conversations among the same people.
You are already good at this. You have placed the stories, led the accounts, advised demanding clients, and earned the title. Somewhere along the way, you may also have been assigned a lane: climate, health, technology, philanthropy. You know it cold. You could pitch it in your sleep.
At DEY., we’re looking for a strong leader who can bring together creative teams, manage complex projects, and see good ideas through to execution. But a senior title here does not mean only managing the people who do the work. It also means staying close to the work that drew you to this field in the first place. If you enjoy helping a team do its best work and still want to pitch, write, and be in the room when the strategy is set, this may be the place for you.
If that sounds like you, and your track record backs it up, send us a résumé and a cover letter that makes us take notice.
This position is listed under two titles, Senior Vice President and Vice President, but there is only one opening. We welcome applicants at both experience levels and will evaluate every candidate holistically to determine the right fit and the right level. Apply to the title that best aligns with your background.
This role drives earned media work across DEY.'s client portfolio, turning strategy into coverage in the outlets that matter most to each client. The role is hands-on at both levels. You will develop angles, pitch and place stories, prepare principals for interviews, and serve as a day-to-day counselor to clients, while mentoring members of the team and bringing media thinking into new business. You will work closely with DEY.'s senior leadership on the firm's most complex media moments.
- Develop and execute media strategies across DEY.’s client portfolio that place the right ideas in front of the right audiences at the right moment
- Draw on an active network of relationships across tier-one print, broadcast, digital, and emerging media/creators to secure high-impact coverage for clients
- Identify and develop compelling media angles, narratives, and hooks that cut through in a crowded and fast-moving media environment
- Stay ahead of shifts in the media environment, including new outlets/platforms, changing editorial priorities, and emerging formats, and translate that intelligence into smarter strategy for clients and the team
- Cultivate and develop new relationships across all media channels
- Serve as a senior day-to-day counselor to DEY. clients, advising on communications strategy, message development, and media positioning
- Guide clients through sensitive or high-stakes communications situations, including issues management, with clarity, calm, and sound judgment, drawing in firm leadership on reputation-critical moments
- Build and maintain direct, trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders, functioning as a long-term thought partner
- Translate client objectives and subject matter into media strategies that are both ambitious and achievable
- Mentor junior and mid-level team members on media work, elevating pitch quality, media targeting, and relationship-building across the organization
- Partner with DEY. leadership to embed media excellence into the firm’s culture and ways of working
- Oversee best practices in earned media process and operations, ensuring consistency across account teams to use our tools, tracking systems, methods of outreach, etc.
- Set the direction of the earned media practice across the portfolio and carry accountability for the development of the media team
- Support the cultivation of new client opportunities, drawing on your network and media relationships
- Contribute to the pitch process, shaping the media strategy within proposals and presenting to prospective clients
- Identify opportunities to grow existing client relationships into deeper, broader engagements
- Stay attuned to the competitive environment and provide market intelligence that informs how DEY. positions its media relations capabilities
- Lead pitch teams through the full new business process and take an active role in sourcing opportunities
- 12+ years of experience in public relations, earned media, or strategic communications for the Vice President level, and 15+ years for the Senior Vice President level, in both cases including several years managing client relationships and mentoring junior staff
- An active network of media relationships spanning national and international outlets across print, broadcast, podcasts, and emerging formats
- A proven track record of securing high-impact earned media coverage for prominent clients in complex subject areas
- Working fluency in reputation management, issues counsel, and high-stakes communications strategy
- The ability to develop sophisticated media strategies and the hands-on skill to execute them
- Strong presence and succinct communication skills, with experience advising senior leaders under pressure
- Exceptional organization and responsiveness, with the speed that fast-moving client and media work requires
- An instinct for anticipating what clients and colleagues will need, and for taking initiative rather than waiting for direction
- Substantive engagement with the issues DEY. works on, including climate, global health, AI, foreign policy, and philanthropy
- Residence in the tri-state area, with availability to travel to New York City and elsewhere as client relationships, media engagements, and business development require on short notice
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future visa sponsorship
- Experience in journalism or media, in addition to communications
- An existing public profile, such as writing, speaking, or commentary, in a relevant field
- Cross-sector fluency spanning multiple of DEY.’s focus areas
This role is hybrid. We hold in-person work days every two weeks and get together regularly with journalists and clients, so we're looking for someone in the tri-state area, with a preference for New York City. Willingness and nimbleness to show up for such meetings are essential. Some travel comes with the role. The work at DEY. is immersive and high-touch, and we expect everyone on the team to be engaged and proactive. We also believe a good life happens outside of work, and we trust our people to manage their time accordingly. Results are what count.
The salary range for this role is $140,000 to $185,000. An employee's position within the range will be based on several factors, including relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs. The range is one component of DEY.'s total compensation package, which may also include an annual bonus. DEY. offers medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k), paid time off, travel assistance, and wellness programming.
If your achievements reflect what we're after and you share our curiosity about the world, send a cover letter that makes us take notice, along with your resume, to hr@dey.nyc. Please include your name and the title you are applying for, SVP or VP, in the subject line.
DEY. is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace. We consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, military or veteran status, or any other basis protected by federal, state, or local law. If you require a reasonable accommodation in any part of the employment process, please let us know.
