Program Overview:

We are launching the Students for Debbie Spielberg Leadership Program, a structured opportunity for high school and college students to gain hands on experience in community engagement, event coordination, communications, and team leadership.


This program is designed for students who want to build real world skills, grow their résumé, earn SSL or community service hours or internship credit, and take on meaningful responsibilities in a real civic environment. No prior campaign or political experience is required.


Students work closely with the campaign manager and senior staff in a supportive, educational setting focused on leadership development and community impact.


About Debbie Spielberg:

Debbie Spielberg has spent more than 15 years working in Montgomery County government, focused on strengthening public services, improving community support systems, and making local government more responsive and accessible.


She previously served as Legislative Director for Congressman John Lewis, where she worked on civil rights, community development, and public engagement. Debbie also served as Campaign Chair for State Senator Jamie Raskin from 2008 to 2016 and worked for Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich for more than 15 years. Her career reflects a deep commitment to community centered leadership and public service.


Through this leadership program, students contribute to real community initiatives, support local events, help connect with residents, and elevate youth perspectives in local conversations.


Available Student Leadership Roles:

Students may be assigned a leadership title based on their interests and strengths, including:

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Field Director

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Outreach Director

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Community Engagement Director

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Finance Director

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Events and Logistics Director

• Students for Debbie Spielberg Communications and Social Media Manager


These roles allow students to develop leadership skills, manage projects, collaborate with peers, and take ownership of meaningful work.


What Students Gain:

• SSL hours for eligible high school students

• Community service credit

• Résumé building experience in communications, outreach, leadership, event planning, and civic engagement

• Mentorship and guidance from campaign leadership

• Letters of recommendation upon successful participation

• Opportunities to take on team lead or coordinator roles

• Real world experience supporting community events and resident engagement


This is an unpaid student leadership program that offers SSL hours, community service credit, internship credit, résumé building experience, mentorship, and real world leadership opportunities. Students who take on active roles and contribute meaningfully will also receive personalized support, including introductions to community leaders and professionals in our network to help them take next steps in their academic or career journey.


Responsibilities:

Responsibilities vary by role and may include:

• Coordinating or supporting community events

• Assisting with outreach and communication projects

• Supporting event planning and logistics

• Collaborating with fellow student leaders

• Participating in community based projects aligned with student interests

• Contributing to communications or social media tasks when applicable


Who Should Apply:

• High school or college students

• Students seeking leadership experience, SSL hours, or résumé development

• Students involved in mental health, wellness, environmental, civic engagement, public service, service learning, or communications clubs

• Organized, reliable, and willing to learn

• No prior campaign experience required


Time Commitment:

Flexible. After school hours, evenings, and weekends are all possible.

SSL hours, community service, & internship credit are available.


Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Students who are not seeking a leadership role but want to help with campaign activities are also encouraged to apply. Volunteer tasks may include event support, canvassing assistance, data entry, flyering, and other short-term or flexible tasks. No leadership experience required.
