Job Description
Working under the supervision of the Executive Director and Deputy Director, the Transportation
Planner/Organizer will conduct research, advocacy, and organizing in all aspects of NYC-EJA’s work on
transportation equity – including vehicle electrification, e-commerce warehouse regulation, public transit equity, transportation-related emissions reduction, legislation and more. The Transportation Planner/Organizer represents NYC-EJA in the ElectrifyNY coalition, the Last-Mile Coalition, the Congestion Pricing campaign, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Environmental Justice Coalition and other local transportation initiatives and potential areas of work.
Responsibilities
- Represent NYC-EJA as the lead coordinator of ElectrifyNY, a statewide coalition of environmental
justice, public transportation, social justice and jobs advocates in the fight for a clean, equitable electric
transportation future for New York.
- Represent NYC-EJA as the lead coordinator of the Last-Mile Coalition, a citywide coalition of
environmental justice and public health advocates fighting to regulate e-commerce warehouses in New
York City and mitigate the impacts of the explosive growth of e-commerce warehouses .
- Represent NYC-EJA as part of the steering committee of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway
Environmental Justice Coalition, a borough-wide coalition of community-based organizations and
advocates fighting for a comprehensive corridor-wide plan centering environmental justice.
- Represent NYC-EJA in monitoring the progress of the nation’s first Congestion Pricing plan to ensure
that revenues from the new cordon tolling program in Manhattan’s central business district are
committed to investments in mass transit and mitigation to reduce the uneven impact of air pollution in
environmental justice communities.
- Conduct research and policy analysis at the local, state and federal level (where applicable) on
transportation regulations, funding and technological innovation to inform advocacy campaigns.
- Coordinate and manage all aspects of existing campaigns, while developing opportunities for new
campaigns as needed.
- Represent NYC-EJA in meetings, public hearings, and various stakeholder proceedings throughout the
city and state on transportation planning, policy, regulation and legislation.
- Draft and produce planning reports, policy papers, data analyses, testimonies, position statements and other research documents, as required.
- Facilitate engagement of NYC-EJA member organizations in individual campaigns;;
- Work with the Executive and Deputy Directors in preparing fundraising applications, status reports, and other documents required for NYC-EJA's development activities; and
- Support other organizational and administrative priorities as required.
Qualifications
- Master’s/advanced degree in planning, transportation/environmental policy, sustainability management, urban affairs, or political science, plus three years organizing/advocacy experience; or, in the alternative, B.A., plus five years’ experience required
- Knowledge of environmental justice and climate justice required
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills required
- NYC experience preferred
- Must be a team player, yet able to work independently and be self-motivated
- A sense of humor is a plus

Preference for knowledge, skills, and experience in some of the following:
- Demonstrated ability to develop campaign strategies, experience and understanding of policy
advocacy, and coalition building
- Experience planning/executing actions, rallies, press conferences, and other events
- Experience working with low-income communities and communities of color
- Experience working in coalition with diverse stakeholders
- Research, data gathering and analysis;
- GIS mapping and spatial analysis a plus;
- Ability to facilitate small group and large public meetings;
- Experience navigating challenging conversations and building consensus;
- Fluency in a language other than English a plus;
- Graphic Design, including infographics, report layout and other graphic design skills using
Adobe Creative Suite programs, Canva, or other software programs.
