Global Language Center (GLC) has been working with the State Department for the last 13 years providing foreign language training for new and continuing Foreign Service Officers, Diplomats and Ambassadors.

We are currently seeking candidates for a full-time Communications Advisor in Arlington, VA supporting (FSI). Applicant must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis and be a U.S. citizen and must be able to obtain a secret security clearance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the FSI’s Legislative Affairs liaison, responding to Congressional taskings
  • Coordinates institute-level responses on sensitive issues with various FSI components, other bureaus, and the Bureau of Legislative Affairs
  • Creates and implements a proactive Congressional engagement strategy for FSI and ensures proper KM and processes related to FSI’s Congressional relations;
  • Serves as project manager for complex multi-faceted projects requiring multiple layers of planning, and program and event coordination with internal and external partners, as well as vendors
  • Drafts, to a high standard and quality with minimal input, complex, nuanced memos for senior-level consumption
  • Coaches school Outreach Liaisons on effective and coherent approaches to strategic communications that align with FSI’s vision and the Department of State’s mission
  • Reviews school-related communication products in alignment with FSI public affairs and branding standards
  • Creates communication products, materials, and digital content that tells FSI’s story and advances brand coherence and reach (including but not limited to newsletters, targeted e-mails, event announcements, images, short videos, website content, and social media posts)
  • Fosters collaborative relationships with Outreach Liaisons, Division Directors, Course Coordinators and other staff across FSI in order to ensure the proper function of public affairs and produce content for distribution on internal and outwardly facing communication platforms
  • Provides back-up support to the Director of Public Affairs with press relations, event planning, and program management
  • Provides support to the digital and social media specialist in the development and deployment of digital content
  • Champions adoption of FSI’s recent rebranding and style guidelines with colleagues throughout FSI. Organizes campaigns, initiatives, and events in conjunction with the Public Affairs Director, Social Media Specialist, and other staff
  • Assesses, evaluates and iterates changes to FSI processes, work flows and systems to address evolving communication needs
  • Participates in outreach program reviews, evaluation, and strategic planning to ensure quality, relevance, and effectiveness of approaches
  • Benchmarks with industry leaders where appropriate
  • Facilitates taskings and responses to press and public affairs related inquiries
  • Supports other outreach and communication projects and VIP visits
  • Knowledge of design, user experience, and design thinking, and experience applying these approaches to communications and outreach
  • Experience evaluating public affairs activities utilizing Google Analytics and other data analysis tools and metrics

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience working in communications, government, or a related field
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
  • Excellent written and spoken command of the English language
  • Proven track record managing complex and multi-faceted projects and initiatives that required coordination with multiple internal and external partners across an extended period of time. Experience managing project budgets
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, prioritize, and competently manage a variety of activities with multiple deadlines
  • High level of experience producing written and visual products that inform, educate, and drive action and meet deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact effectively in multicultural settings
