Job Type: Full-time Exempt

Salary Range: $150,000 to $175,000 per year


The Role

The Executive Director, Coalition For Healthcare Communication (CHC) reports to the 4A’s EVP, Government Relations and Sustainability, and is based in Washington, DC. 

The Executive Director is a representative on behalf of the CHC, an integrated entity of the 4A’s, to Congress, federal regulatory agencies, including but not limited to the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services, Veterans Health Administration, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, etc., and the 50 state governments. This role represents the interests and concerns of the healthcare communications community on all things healthcare marketing. Members include medical marketing and advertising firms, digital publishers and medical communications providers. 

The Executive Director manages public policy and industry advocacy on issues that include healthcare marketing, pharmaceutical marketing, the tax treatment of pharmaceutical advertising, data privacy, and the protection of intellectual property and commercial free speech, among other issues. 

The role also involves the coordination of efforts with peer organizations including but not limited to the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), the Food Industry Association, Advanced Medical Technology Association, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the Drug Information Association, the Food and Drug Law Institute, the Alliance For A Stronger FDA, The Reagan-Udall Foundation, and the Association of Medical Media. 

The Executive Director will also interact with 4A’s regional boards and councils as well as represent the CHC and 4A’s in industry coalitions.


Core Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement advocacy programs on federal and state policy issues that impact healthcare marketing.
  • Serve as the lead communicator to CHC and 4A’s members on updates to laws and regulations concerning all things healthcare marketing.
  • Representing industry’s POV to media and to industry organizations (i.e. DTC National, Point of Care Marketing Association, ISMPP, DIA, etc.). 
  • Interact regularly with Congress, committees, regulatory agencies, and advisors on issues related to healthcare marketing and commercial speech issues.
  • Track and manage state-level issues of concern and interact with governors offices, state legislators, and state attorneys general.
  • Advise CHC and 4A’s membership services team and coordinate with regional 4A’s SVPs on relevant state and federal developments.
  • Respond to inquiries from CHC and 4A’s members as needed. 
  • Organize grassroots efforts among local member communities in response to state and federal healthcare marketing concerns.
  • Brief CHC and 4A’s executives and working committees on Washington issues.
  • Participate in industry standards and self-regulatory bodies.
  • Work closely with the 4A’s staff to plan CHC and joint CHC + 4A’s events.

 

The Ideal Candidate Will

  • Bring a strong familiarity with healthcare marketing issues and have an understanding of the associated entities that regulate them.
  • Have a general familiarity with the advertising industry (preferred, but not required).
  • Have experience with Congressional committees including House Ways and Means, Senate Finance, House Energy and Commerce, and Senate Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (preferred, but not required). 
  • Have experience with the Federal Trade Commision, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Food and Drug Administration.
  • Be a strategic thinker with the ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Be a strong writer and communicator with the ability to synthesize complex information, succinctly and accurately.
  • Strong ability to pivot priorities quickly and meet deadlines.
  • Have experience or familiarity with running membership organizations. 
  • Have at least 5-7 years of relevant experience.

In a joint partnership with the 4A’s, the CHC advocates for healthcare professionals and American consumers to receive truthful, accurate information regarding pharmaceuticals, medical products and devices, and patient care by protecting commercial speech and championing the benefits of healthcare marketing. Responsible product promotion and other communications directed to healthcare professionals assure that those who prescribe, administer, and dispense prescription drugs and medical devices, and the patients who use them, will have the information necessary to use these products appropriately, effectively, and safely.

 

The CHC and its members support industry and government efforts to ensure that healthcare professionals and consumers have available quality health information and to foster industry-supported information that is ethical and of high quality.
