Job Description

THE ROLE: State Policy Advocate

American Student Assistance™ (ASA) is national nonprofit that is changing the way kids learn about careers and prepare for their futures through access to career-readiness information and experiences.

ASA fulfills its mission through free digital-first direct experiences, philanthropy, advocacy, thought leadership, groundbreaking research, and impact investing. We believe that exploring career possibilities, as early as middle school, and providing access to education-to-career pathways aligned with one’s passions and goals will result in greater confidence and long-term success for all students.

We are looking for a State Policy Advocate who will be responsible for partnering with the broad Social Impact team on internal-facing and external-facing projects that advance ASA’s organizational priorities, particularly around a new state-level strategy and workstream.

What You’ll Do

  • In collaboration with ASA’s Policy & Advocacy team, create and execute a strategy for state level advocacy for ASA’s core issues.
  • Develop a policy platform and package tailored for the Governor in each target state based on their state's findings and unique needs.
  • Develop relationships with state legislators and state agencies, local/state advocates, and other stakeholders, such as, school systems, trade associations, think tanks, business groups, parents, and policymaker staff, either in person or remotely.
  • Facilitate the creation, leadership and execution of state-level advocacy campaigns on priority issues.
  • Track, monitor and analyze relevant state legislation.

About You

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with education or labor policy, government relations, or non-profit advocacy at the state level. Must have experience working with state legislative bodies.
  • Experience with policy analysis and running advocacy campaigns necessary.
  • Proven ability to research, interpret and simplify both verbally and in writing complex legislative issues.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and develop actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of policies and education systems ASA seeks to influence.

Why ASA?

ASA offers a wide range of perks and benefits to Associates, including comprehensive medical, dental, and vision healthcare plans, a retirement plan (plus match), weekly lunches, commuter benefits, and tuition reimbursement.

We also heavily prioritize a healthy work/life balance, which is why we offer all full-time associates generous PTO options, Summer Fridays (every Friday off between Memorial Day and Labor Day), and a company holiday break between December 25th and January 1st.

ASA works in a Hybrid schedule (2) two days a week in our Boston HQ. We prioritize strategic thinkers, collaborators, and work/life pros who are looking to help make a difference in kid's education and career goals.
