The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 200 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

CSIS is seeking a Fellow or Senior Fellow in the Transnational Threats Project (TNT) to conduct research and engage in business development in irregular warfare, gray zone activities, intelligence, counterterrorism, and related topics. The work focuses on conducting objective research and analysis to inform U.S. policymakers, the private sector, and the U.S. public’s understanding of major national security and intelligence issues. These issues include Chinese, Russian, and Iranian irregular and gray zone activities; terrorism and counterterrorism, including domestic extremism; intelligence; and related areas.

The minimum annual salary for a Fellow in this position is $80,000 and the minimum annual salary for a Senior Fellow in this position is $115,000, commensurate with experience.


Essential duties and responsibilities

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to the following:

The Fellow or Senior Fellow reports to Dr. Seth G. Jones, Senior Vice President and Director, TNT and International Security Program (ISP). Functions may include but are not limited to the following

• Manages and coordinates the day-to-day workflow of TNT in close consultation with the TNT Director, including in such areas as irregular warfare, intelligence, and counterterrorism.

• Works closely with the Director to oversee business development; manage the project budget; oversee grants and contracts, including preparing reports; develop applications and proposals for new opportunities; and secure new and/or follow-on funding.

• Plays a leadership role in convening expert groups in both private and public fora, as well as participating in workshops, international exchanges, and conferences.

• Provides thought leadership and strategic guidance.

• Leads both individual and collaborative research projects that advance critical issues related to irregular and gray zone activities; terrorism and counterterrorism; intelligence; and related areas.

• Provides close supervision and active mentoring of associate staff.


Knowledge, education, and experience

• M.A./M.S. required; PhDs also encouraged to apply.

• At least 7 years of professional experience in national security.

• Experience managing personnel, projects, budgets, and grants strongly preferred.

• Substantive research experience working on national security and intelligence.

• Superior writing, editing, and analytical skills.

• Demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and lead complex events and/or conferences.

• Strong communication and convening skills, including the ability to effectively present information.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Ability to interact with and respond to questions from a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions from across a wide spectrum of views on intelligence and national security.

• Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success working in highly collaborative, team-based environments.

• Candidates should possess sound judgment and impeccable integrity, positive attitude, and creative outlook.
