Job Description
ABOUT BMH
Bell, McAndrews & Hiltachk, LLP (BMH) is a law firm in downtown Sacramento, founded in 1991. The firm specializes in compliance with governmental ethics, campaign finance, and lobbying disclosure laws; supervises political advertising, fundraising and spending; writes state and local laws proposed to voters through the ballot measure process; and represents clients in political-related litigation and enforcement matters. The firm’s attorneys and political reporting specialists are an integral part of every campaign, facilitating compliance with complicated laws so each client can pursue their political or policy objectives. The firm’s clients care about winning, but also care about how they win – and know they can trust BMH to ensure their activities comply with the complicated rules that regulate their efforts to influence voters and policy makers.
BMH is looking for a Political Reporting Specialist to join our team. Essential skills and traits:
Meet deadlines. The outcome of the day-to-day work is the timely filing of accurate public disclosure statements of fundraising and spending, signed under penalty of perjury, subject to scrutiny by government, media, watchdogs, and political opponents.
Multi-task. There is a rhythm to every election cycle, calendar year, quarter, and month. Some tasks are completed annually, others quarterly, monthly, or daily. Some tasks are known well in advance and are predictable, and some are unexpected interruptions. Regardless, every responsibility must be appropriately prioritized and completed in a timely, accurate manner.
Prompt and professional communication. Clients and co-workers are entitled to know their request is in the queue, be given an expectation of when the request will be complete, and receive confirmation when a project is done. Our favorite compliment from clients is how quickly our staff provide information and answers.
Perfectionist. Every penny in every account BMH manages must be in its proper place with a name. Public reports and private financial information must be accurate, with internally consistent formatting, lacking typos and other errors. Organized records must be maintained to substantiate every financial report.
Problem solver. Work through difficult situations, short deadlines, collaborate with colleagues to find a solution, be creative, ask questions.
Specifics:
Political Reporting Specialist will be assigned a variety of clients to directly provide services, including deposits, payments, regular email and phone communication, preparation and filing of public disclosure reports and private financial and reconciliation statements.
2-5 years of experience in political law compliance required, including preparation and filing of campaign and lobbying disclosure reports, banking and accounting/bookkeeping duties, and competency with Quickbooks and Excel. Experience with Netfile (software) and nonprofit taxes is helpful but not required.
Salary $68,640 to $80,000, depending on experience. This is an exempt position. Regular office hours Monday through Friday, 8:30am-5:30pm.
Firm provides an office, benefits (health, dental), paid vacation and sick leave, participation in profit sharing retirement plan, and onsite parking. Firm also supports membership in California Political Treasurers Association for ongoing professional development and networking.
