Legislative Representative, Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM)

The Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) is seeking a Legislative Representative.

Who We Are:

TCU/IAM is a labor union representing 31,000 workers across the country, primarily in freight and commuter rail as well as Amtrak and transit agencies – but we also represent some Disney World employees. TCU/IAM is a merged affiliate of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).

The Position:

The Legislative Representative will work under TCU’s National Legislative Director, reporting to the Office of the National President. • An ideal candidate must be a self-starter, motivated by the desire to protect workers’ rights and promote working class issues.
  • The ability to quickly comprehend and adapt to various legislative and political issues as they arise is key.
  • Strong consideration will be given to candidates who can demonstrate the ability to independently develop and execute legislative and political initiatives.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum of three years of professional experience required, including some experience on Capitol Hill, the executive branch, or in legislative/regulatory advocacy.
  • Priority will be given to candidates with experience in organized labor and/or railroad and transportation policy.
  • This is not an entry-level position.

Knowledge and Additional Skills Needed:

  • Well-developed interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Highly organized with dedication to accuracy and detail oriented.
  • Reliability, punctuality and time management are essential.
  • Ability to exhibit discretion and sound judgment when dealing with confidential matters.

Hours, Location and Travel:

  • Hours are flexible, but mostly range from 9am-5:00pm at minimum. Must be able to work later or earlier (within reason) when necessary for political events, meetings, etc.
  • Accessible during off hours as required (sometimes politics/legislation requires late or early calls/zooms).
  • Position is located in Washington, DC, close to Capitol Hill.
  • Infrequent travel to TCU/IAM’s Headquarters in Rockville, MD will be required.
  • Minimum of twice-annual travel to our training center in southern Maryland, as well as conferences and conventions as assigned by the National President.
  • This is not a remote position. If outside the DMV area, must be willing to relocate.

Salary & Benefits:

TCU offers a very competitive pay and benefits package, commensurate with experience.

Benefits include:

  • Generous vacation, sick and maternal/paternal leave policies.
  • Top-notch health, dental, vision and life insurance.
  • 401(K)
  • Retirement Pension Plan
  • Railroad Retirement

TCU/IAM is an equal opportunity employer and firmly believes that the anti-worker policies we fight back against disproportionately hurt the most marginalized members of our society, including people of color, people from working class backgrounds, women, and LGBTQ people. Advocating for these communities is centered in the work we do, and we therefore strongly encourage people with these identities or who are members of other marginalized communities to apply.
