Researcher I (DFL Caucus)

Reports To: Assistant Research Director

Minimum salary is $52,627 (Salary will be set commensurate with experience)

This position has an anticipated start date of after December 14, 2020.

This position is open until December 9, 2020.

Position Summary

This position serves as a resource for Senators and staff on designated issues within the Minority caucus. The primary responsibilities include building and maintaining expertise on issues, tracking and analyzing issues and legislation, assisting Senators with queries and constituent concerns, and collaborating on group research projects.

Primary Responsibilities

Provide research expertise, support, and communication to Senators, staff, and lobbyists.

Build and maintain knowledge about issues within assigned committee jurisdictions from news sources and other publications.

Serve as a policy expert to Senators and staff during the legislative session.

Monitor assigned issues for Senators, staff, and research team members, using Internet resources, the revisor's system, Senate and House websites, committee hearings, and other information sources.

Attend hearings and other informational meetings to stay current on issues, recording committee actions for Senators.

Prepare and write bill committee briefs using multiple sources for Senators and staff to use as a resource during and after the legislative session.

Provide preparation to members on committee issues, including questions and talking points for use in committee hearings.

Maintain a tracking system for numerous bills as they evolve through the legislative process, with regular updates for bill changes and status.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Marketing, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, Business Administration, or related area of study AND two (2) years of legislative experience serving in any capacity.

OR

Five (5) years of work experience in policy advocacy, public policy, public administration, or in a legislative setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated high-level written and oral communication skills.

Ability to explain legislation, policies, and issues to the public, news media, and other interested parties in writing and orally.

Interest in supporting Senators as they serve constituents and develop public policy.

Ability to work long hours and meet deadlines.

Ability to respond to a variety of people in authority and prioritize multiple requests on short notice.

Ability to maintain composure and work cooperatively under pressure with legislators, legislative staff, lobbyists, and the public.
