The Institute for Justice, the national law firm for liberty, is seeking an Accounting Manager at its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, to support its Finance team.


The Accounting Manager manages the daily operations of the accounting function and monitors compliance with financial policies and procedures and regulatory framework while reporting directly to the Assistant Controller and supervising the Junior Accountant and Accounts Payable Clerk.


Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily accounting operations including account receivables and account payables cycles.
  • Analyze, document and record grant contributions according to GAAP and work closely with Development department to ensure timely and accurate accounting of contributions.
  • Manage expense and travel software and monitor compliance with travel policies.
  • Prepare ledger entries, reconcile accounts, and assist with month-end and year-end close.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with financial policies and regulatory framework.
  • Assist with the preparation of information for annual financial audits.
  • Ensure compliance with accurate and timely submission of annual IRS 1099 filings and assist with information for the annual tax return with the IRS.
  • Assist in the identification, evaluation and selection of new solutions (e.g. software, processes) as needed, to ensure efficient operation of accounting functions.
  • Manage and guide the junior accountant and accounts payable clerk to ensure they are motivated and perform at their best.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance, with preference for CPA candidates.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with a focus on nonprofit accounting.
  • Proficiency in various technologies including MS Office Excel and ERP systems, with a preference for experience with Intacct and Concur.
  • Demonstrated skills in management, analysis, communication, problem-solving, and organization.
  • Keen attention to detail and a dedication to maintaining accuracy in all tasks.
  • Proficient in prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines, adept at both personal time management and delegating tasks to direct reports.
  • Strong communication skills to facilitate interactions with staff and vendors, as well as to provide guidance and support to junior team members.
