Job Description
The Charlotte Hornets seek a part-time, paid communications associate during the 2023-24 NBA season (September – April) to play a key role in the day-to-day operations and objectives of the communications department. The candidate should be detailed oriented, organized and possess strong communication skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the Hornets PR staff in all aspects of the team’s public and media relations efforts.
- Prepare credentials, cover sheets and visiting media/PR packets for every home game.
- Track and compile daily media clips.
- Contribute to team publications (media guide, preseason/postseason guides, training camp guide and draft guide).
- Attend Hornets media availabilities and events (interviews, content, press conferences, media day, draft workouts).
- Compose press releases, media advisories and media availability updates as necessary.
- Serve as first point of contact for media on home gamedays by staffing media entrance and will call.
- Help with game notes and statistic tracking.
- Set up and tear down media workroom and media row on gamedays.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.
SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES
The candidate should demonstrate the following competencies to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, journalism, sports management or related field preferred.
- Experience in collegiate or professional athletic communications, sports information or sports media preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign and Microsoft Outlook is a plus.
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people and develop strong relationships.
- Must be well organized, detail-oriented and demonstrate an ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to multi-task under time constraints, meet deadlines and work within a fast-paced industry and environment.
- Excellent communications skills – both written and verbal.
- A resourceful problem solver and a team player.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays.
