All positions at the NM Public Education Department are based in Santa Fe, however some may operate through our Albuquerque office based on home address and space availability.

Policy and Legislative Affairs Division: Our team helps inform or craft policies or legislative proposals that align with the Public Education Department's mission, vision, and goals. This includes conducting bill analyses during the legislative session, attending interim legislative hearings, and leading or assisting with the rule-making process.

This position exists to support the agency in helping inform or craft policies or legislative proposals that align with the agency's mission, vision, and goals. This includes conducting bill analyses during the legislative session, attending interim legislative hearings, and leading or assisting with the rulemaking process.
How does it get done?

Policy development and outreach - 50% - entails assisting with or leading the rule-making process. This includes working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure proposed rule-making or guidance aligns with statute and agency priorities, all in consideration of how practical implementation of proposed rules would impact educational outcomes. This also includes assisting agency staff with the development of program guidance.
Legislative engagement - 35% - entails helping review or craft legislative proposals that align with the agency's priorities. During the legislative session, this includes conducting bill analyses and potentially serving as an expert witness for legislative proposals. During the interim, this includes attending legislative committee meetings and keeping agency leadership or staff informed of pertinent information.
Special projects - 15% - entails other duties assigned by the Policy and Legislative Affairs Division, which may include representing the Division or agency on initiatives, programs, or task forces led by agency staff or external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration, or Business Administration and five (5) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
