Job Description
Senator Julian Cyr represents Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. First elected to the State Senate in November 2016, Senator Cyr is now serving in his third term and is among the youngest senators in the 40-member body. He is the Senate Assistant Majority Whip; Chair of the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Racial Equity, Civil Rights, and Inclusion; Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs; and serves on committees with oversight of health care policy, public health, telecommunications and energy, COVID-19 emergency management, and redistricting. The District Director manages constituent services, District events, and the District Office for Senator Cyr. Other major responsibilities include stakeholder engagement, drafting various types of internal and external correspondence, and advising the Senator on District-related matters.
Position title: District Director Time: Full time, 37.5 hours per week
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Position based in: District based, with regular days in Hyannis, MA and routine travel to Boston, MA (Virtual for the time being)
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Serve as primary staff for the Senator’s District Office.
- Manage constituent services.
- Liaise with state agencies to manage ongoing constituent cases.
- Partner with Representative offices to assist shared constituents.
- Liaise with municipal officials and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the District.
- Plan and staff meetings and events across the District for the Senator.
- Coordinate with other Cape delegation and legislative offices for scheduling and planning district-wide meetings and events.
- Represent and staff the Senator at events and meetings as necessary.
- Serve as Senator’s designee to commissions and task forces, as assigned.
- Oversee the creation of legislative citations and resolutions.
- Manage and respond to all grant support letter requests.
- Assist the Legislative Director in monitoring and recommending bill co-sponsorships, resolutions, and legislative letter sign-on requests, especially for District-related priorities.
- Help summarize, research, draft, and file legislation, amendments, and bill testimony.
- Provide staff support for legislative and policy research, communications and social media projects, and community events as assigned.
Qualifications
This position requires the following:
- Knowledge of or professional experience with the Cape and Islands District that demonstrates an understanding of the region’s priorities and key issues.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Excellent research, writing and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to solve problems and complete projects.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a demanding and fast paced environment.
- Regular travel across the Cape & Islands District and to the State House.
- Willingness and ability to work some evening and weekend hours, especially during busy periods of the legislative year.
- Any combination of education and experience that indicates strong writing and analytic reasoning skills.
Strongly desired, but not required:
- Knowledge of the Massachusetts Legislature, legislative process, and Massachusetts Law.
- 1-3 years of relevant work experience.

The Senate requires all Senate employees to have received COVID-19 vaccination [by October 15, 2021] or to have been approved for exemption as a condition of employment.
