Job Description

Position overview: Reporting to the Editorial Manager and based out of Malala Fund’s London, New York City or Washington, D.C. office, the Editorial Assistant will support Malala Fund’s Communications and Creative team in amplifying the voices of girls around the world and in covering Malala Fund’s work in its programmatic countries (currently Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey). This position will assist in proofreading, editing and writing for Malala Fund’s external facing content — including for Assembly, Malala Fund’s digital publication and newsletter — and provide administrative support to the Editorial Manager. The ideal candidate is a highly organised individual with strong writing skills who thrives in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, creative environment.

I. Responsibilities and tasks

  • Assist the Editorial Manager in proofreading and copy-editing (e.g., Assembly posts, website copy, letters, reports, essays and other written materials) in accordance with Malala Fund’s style guide.
  • Provide administrative support to the Editorial Manager, including meeting notes, expense and budget tracking, transcribing interviews and other duties as assigned.
  • Manage projects between Communications staff and consultants, including translators, graphic designers, printers and other Malala Fund departments.
  • Research and write a variety of original content for Assembly and correspond with potential contributors.
  • Participate in editorial meetings to brainstorm and generate ideas for Assembly and newsroom stories and features.
  • Maintain communications databases to track outreach, content and metrics, as well as published articles, photos and other assets.
  • Help maintain Malala Fund’s website by formatting posts and updating content.
  • Translate posts (if fluent in a second language that is relevant to Malala Fund’s work).

II. Qualifications and experience

  • At least one year of relevant work experience in communications, publishing or media (this may include internship experience).
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with previous experience in proofreading and copyediting.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and prioritise a professional workload while working well under pressure and deadlines.
  • Proven capacity to maintain a high degree of confidentiality of sensitive organisational matters.
  • Written fluency in any language(s) relevant to Malala Fund’s work is strongly preferred but not required.
  • A demonstrated commitment to gender and racial equality.
  • Legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom or the United States.

Malala Fund is working toward a world where all girls can learn for 12 years and lead without fear. We advocate for resources and policy changes needed to give all girls a secondary education. The girls we serve have high goals for themselves — and we have high expectations for leaders who can help them. We invest in developing country education leaders and frontline organisations — the people who best understand girls in their communities — in regions where most girls are missing out on secondary school. We amplify girls’ voices. Malala Fund is building a movement of young education activists who, like Malala, speak truth to power around the world.
