Senior Legislative Assistant

The Office of Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (IL-03) seeks an experienced Senior Legislative Assistant to join the Washington, DC team. The Senior Legislative Assistant serves as the Member's primary expert on an assigned set of public policy issues, including Housing, Financial Services, and Transportation and Infrastructure, and works closely with the Legislative Director and Chief of Staff to develop and execute a coordinated legislative strategy for the Member. The Senior Legislative Assistant implements key pieces of the Office’s legislative agenda and policy plans and aligns votes, floor time, committee work, and policy action to deliver tangible resources and legislative victories for the IL-03. The Senior Legislative Assistant writes legislation, letters, talking points, and floor speeches, drafts constituent correspondence on key issues areas, prepares Committee materials and vote recommendations, and meets with constituents and groups on behalf of the Member. They work closely with the Outreach and Communications teams to enact policy change and legislative action in the most strategic, values-aligned way to move the Congresswoman’s priorities forward. 

This is not an entry-level position. The position is based in Washington, DC and is an in-office position. The ideal candidate is a team player who can juggle multiple projects, deliver professional work under tight deadlines, develop and implement new ideas, and stay organized. The position assumes flexible hours, including long hours, nights, and weekends, as needed.

Areas of Responsibility:

  • Strategic Legislative Action: executes a coordinated legislative strategy for the Member in assigned issue areas
  • Legislative Communication: develops legislative content for the Member and for the Office
  • Stakeholder Relations: manages key relationships and meets with constituents and groups on behalf of the Member.
  • Administration: coordinates across functions to advance strategic priorities. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: 

  • Policy experience: 1-2 years of experience in executing successful legislative strategy for elected officials, government agencies, or similar entities. Legislative experience on Capitol Hill with knowledge of House Rules and House procedure is preferred. 
  • Content Expertise: Legislative expertise in Housing and Homelessness, Financial Services, and Transportation and Infrastructure highly preferred. 
  • Strategic thinker: Politically savvy, able to long-game and plan, skilled at navigating complex and challenging situations with stakeholders and Members. 
  • Exceptional coalition-building and relational skills: Exceptional negotiation, influence, problem solving and decision-making skills. Experience successfully collaborating and forming partnerships to advance legislative agendas is preferred. 
  • Exceptional communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Experience writing, editing, and proofreading for various audiences. 
  • Team player and team builder: Expertise in advising others on legislative strategy and the ability to build and cultivate a high performing team. 
  • Strong detail and deadline-management: Capable of planning, prioritizing, and delivering results under tight deadlines and competing priorities. 
  • Conflict resolution: Willingness to accept performance-based criticism and direction, ability to engage and resolve conflict productively. 
  • Proficiency in Spanish is highly preferred. 

Physical Requirements/Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed in an office environment.  
  • Noise levels in the office are usually moderate.
  • Ability to work in a small workstation without expectation of privacy.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including long hours, nights, and weekends, as needed.
  • The work involves carrying of light items such as books, papers, and small office equipment. 
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to use a computer to complete assignments 
  • Ability to communicate with individuals and groups in person, by phone and computer

Salary: $75,000 - $85,000
