The Office of Representative Dean Phillips is seeking a Legislative Assistant to join the legislative team in Washington, DC. The Legislative Assistant will manage a portfolio based on their interests and the team’s needs, but is likely to include: Financial Services, Housing, Retirement, Social Safety Net, National Service, Education, and Children and Families.

The Legislative Assistant is responsible for developing and advancing a proactive policy agenda, preparing and staffing the Member for meetings and events, engaging stakeholders and constituents, and advising the Member on activities occurring on the House Floor and in relevant committees. This position reports to the Legislative Director.

Qualified candidates will excel in the following areas:

  • Creativity and Innovation: able to proactively seek out creative solutions to pressing problems and help develop effective visual and written products to communicate those solutions to constituents in a compelling way.
  • Project Management: able to balance short- and long-term priorities, work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders, and anticipate and prepare for possible obstacles to success.
  • Stakeholder Management: able to foster relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders and find opportunities to collaborate.
  • Commitment to Rep. Phillips’s Ethos: able to internalize the belief in radical hospitality, servant leadership, and the idea that “representation begins with listening."

Ideal candidates will have 1-2 years of work experience, preferably on the Hill; strong experience formulating legislative initiatives; excellent organizational and writing skills; an ability to work cooperatively with team members; and have expert knowledge of the legislative process. Salary is commensurate with experience. Minnesota ties are a plus.
