Are you gifted at designing strategic communication plans and tactics? Are you experienced in crafting communications and messages advocating for critical issues that are key to an organization’s mission? If so, Best Friends Animal Society is looking for you!

Best Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with more than 2,700 animal welfare groups across the country, Best Friends has regional centers in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City, and operates the nation's largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationwide from an estimated 17 million per year to around 733,000. That means there are still about 2,000 dogs and cats killed every day in shelters, just because they don’t have safe places to call home.

With our goal to achieve no-kill by 2025, bring your expertise to Best Friends Animal Society as the Senior Manager of Strategic Communications. In this role, you will serve as the communications lead to develop and execute the communications strategy for critical advocacy issues that are imperative for achieving Best Friends’ goal to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters by the year 2025. Best Friends advocates at the federal, state, and local level for laws and policies that support animal shelters and maximize lifesaving of cats and dogs.

The Senior Manager of Strategic Communications plays a lead role to develop and disseminate key messages that influence public opinion, and to identify and employ tactical measures that drive messages with media, policy makers, and other influencers and decision makers. This position will also play a lead role in issues-based communications (both proactive and reactive), working with the Director of Public Relations and an agency of record to identify areas, and build and implement strategic plans to address them.

Candidates should have a strong grasp of strategic messaging and communications, media relations and contacts, crisis communications, and project management to meet deadlines and ensure objectives are achieved. You are qualified for this role if you have a bachelor’s degree in communications or journalism combined with at least eight years of experience in strategic communications, crisis communications and media relations. Political communications experience is also a must in this role.
