Capital Region Climate Organizer

Mission:

New Yorkers for Clean Power (NYCP) is a statewide campaign to rapidly shift to an equitable clean energy economy. Through education, advocacy, and organizing, our campaign engages the public, local governments, and businesses to advance a range of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and clean transportation solutions. NYCP is focused on advancing solar, wind, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, clean heating and cooling, as well as creating jobs in these industries for all communities in New York.

Job Summary:

The Capital Region Climate Organizer is a full-time position focused on organizing, outreach, education, and mobilizing for the Renewable Heat Now (RHN) campaign, a statewide campaign focused on decarbonizing New York’s buildings. The ideal candidate would have experience with community organizing and a passion for promoting climate solutions. Excellent communication skills, both in-person and online, and the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups are a must. Being collaborative, responsive, good at time management, and flexible are all important qualities for this position.

The Capital Region Climate Organizer will report to the NYCP Director of Organizing and Advocacy and work closely with other organizing staff to advance the goals of the Renewable Heat Now campaign statewide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit for, support logistics for, and staff the RHN campaign’s Albany mobilization days during the upcoming legislative session (January-June)
  • Organize educational events in the community
  • Participate/co-host at least two press events
  • Participate in lobbying meetings with Capital Region legislators; help identify constituents to join
  • Share content on social media platforms
  • Staff tables at community events to recruit new members for building decarbonization advocacy (approximately 2 events per month)
  • Attend a minimum of two weekly campaign meetings (virtual).
  • Keep our contact list up to date and make phone calls, send texts, and send emails to contacts on our list

Education & Experience:

  • Work Experience: Employment or volunteer experience with community organizing, outreach, and public education.
  • General Skills:
    • Energetic, flexible, people-person
    • Highly organized, able to independently manage multiple projects and anticipate obstacles.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills..
  • Computer Skills: Adequate knowledge of word processing, Google Suite including Gmail, Sheets and Docs. Zoom and other virtual meeting applications. Experience with Action Network or similar organizing and data management platforms.
  • Awareness of climate change and clean energy solutions, particularly building decarbonization is a plus.
  • Prior experience in a grassroots organizing environment is a plus.
  • Conditions: This position will occasionally require evenings and weekend hours. We offer a flexible schedule for these times.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a car.
  • Ability to store, transport, set up, break down and keep track of tabling set up (folding table, chair(s), shelter, etc.
  • The position is approximately 75% virtual, 25% in person. Ability to work from home or access to a workspace with high speed internet and a computer is essential.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary commensurate with experience, the salary for this position is $50,000-65,000 annually, with a competitive benefits package including paid vacation, holidays, and sick leave. NYCP is a fiscally sponsored project of Catskill Mountainkeeper.

We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. This is a full-time 40 hours a week M-F salaried position. We are looking for applicants who live in the Capital Region of New York State.
