Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to the job, plus two (2) years of related experience.
  • Experience can substitute for the education up to the maximum of (4) years.

The District 9 City Council Office seeks a talented, enthusiastic Council Communications Strategist to join a small hard-working team.

This position will:
  • Create graphics for social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Prepare content in Mailchimp for the Council Member’s weekly newsletter
  • Develop innovative strategies for social media growth
  • Craft accessible progressive messaging around complex political issues
  • Write talking points, speeches, op-eds, and digital communications
  • Support event logistics and participate in community meetings, town halls, and community outreach events
  • Collaborate with the Council Member’s policy team on key projects
  • Guide and execute a crisis communications plan and respond to breaking news

Strong candidates will possess the following:
  • Skills in creating original digital content, such as graphics and shareable content
  • Passionate about expanding the public presence of the Council Member and District 9 office
  • Passionate about communicating with and engaging the public
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and attention to detail
  • Strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and under tight deadlines
  • Interest in learning and adopting emerging practices in the field of digital communications
  • Strong interest in the field of progressive politics, community organizing, and/or in communications/journalism/public relations/government
  • Connection to or in-depth knowledge of Austin, Texas
  • Ability to design compelling graphics
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national political context

Pay Range
$33.00 – $38.46

Hours
Work hours will vary depending on operational needs. Some evenings and weekends will be required.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  • Researches, organizes analyzes and interprets information to be used in policy making and/or constituent communications.
  • Monitors issues and projects.
  • Prepares, edits and summarizes reports, memos and correspondence; communicating in a professional manner.
  • Acts as liaison between City Executives and City departments.
  • Reviews City Council agenda items.
  • Attends Council meetings, work sessions, community events, etc.
  • Facilitates the flow of information among various groups, (i.e. community, political etc.).
  • Represents City Council member at meetings.
  • Assigns work and monitors task completion.
  • Coordinates activities or projects with others.

Responsibilities- Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
  • May lead and train others.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
  • Knowledge of the functions and organization of municipal government, to include the relationships between departments, divisions, and agencies.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws.
  • Knowledge of city practice, policy and procedures.
