POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a multi-talented Digital Content Manager to join the Museum’s Marketing and Communications team and manage the 911memorial.org website. Our ideal candidate is both a skilled storyteller and a true digital professional who has previously managed web sites and understands the best practices and mechanics of building a seamless and meaningful online experience for our visitors.

In this role, you will plan, create, traffic, publish, edit, and update digital content across our web site. Factoring in new initiatives, site traffic, evolving trends, and user experience, you will always have an eye on potential design and functionality improvements that might further our goals. The site is currently managed in Drupal, but candidates who have worked with an equivalent CMS like WordPress, SquareSpace, Wix, or Hubspot are well-positioned. The role requires excellent writing, proofreading, editing, and editorial judgment skills, with a good eye for web design and the ability to pivot quickly depending on organizational priorities.

The Digital Content Manager functions as gatekeeper of the web site, maintaining the highest standards while working to meet the requests, needs, and sometimes conflicting priorities of different parts of our institution. You will drive the flow of content requests from our partners everywhere in the organization, including Institutional Advancement (Fundraising), Government & Community Affairs, Exhibitions, Collections, Retail, Public Programs, Education, Sales, and Visitor Services. In partnership with the Vice President, Digital Content & Strategy, the Vice President, Digital Product, and other stakeholders, you will work to ensure that the web site, as a frequent first point of contact with potential visitors and supporters, fully reflects and serves the Memorial & Museum’s overarching mission, voice, and messaging.

The Marketing & Communications team is a highly collaborative group that frequently works together on interrelated projects. As part of the team, the Digital Content Manager will contribute to digital content planning overall, ensuring that all website content is timed to complement and align with outgoing emails, internal communications, social media posts, and publicity materials. This individual will also be responsible for managing the web site portion of the team’s editorial calendar.

This role reports to the Vice President of Digital Content and Strategy but will work closely with everyone on the Communications & Marketing team as well as the Vice President of Digital Product and staff across the organization at different levels of seniority. It is a hybrid role allowing for both remote and on-site work at our lower Manhattan office.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, write, edit, and publish content for the organization’s digital property, including the “MEMO” blog, short-form videos, and photo essays.
  • Coordinate with IT and Digital Product to maintain web site standards, provide routine updates, and consistently deliver clear online messaging and information.
  • Work with external agencies to support digital marketing campaigns and coordination of assets for fundraising emails.
  • Drive and implement recommendations on page design, editorial content organization, navigation, and user experience.
  • Develop new content to increase web traffic and coordinate projects across the organization.
  • Oversee search engine optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related communications discipline.
  • While a bachelor’s degree is preferred, we enthusiastically encourage applications from Veterans or veteran spouses with various educational backgrounds. This includes those with an associate degree as well as individuals actively working towards a bachelor’s degree. Your dedication and diverse experiences are highly valued, and we welcome the opportunity to consider your application.
  • Superior communications, writing, and information distilling skills, making you an engaging storyteller who can recognize the relationship between current events, trends, and news to the organization’s mission and collection.
  • 3-5+ years of experience writing for, editing, updating, and managing a web site, preferably at a non-profit or mission-driven organization.
  • Knowledge of Drupal or at least one similar CMS (WordPress, Hubspot, Squarespace, Wix) and a familiarity with basic HTML.
  • Familiarity with web design concepts, practices, and development procedures
  • Ability to multi-task and pivot in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience with analytics tools and SEO.
  • Excellent verbal communication and writing skills, the ability to translate goals into powerful copy, and to extrapolate from abstract ideas into actionable plans.
  • Attention to detail and eagle-eyed proofreading skills.
  • Outgoing, can-do personality and comfort interacting with staff at all levels of the organization, from executive management to volunteers.
  • Sensitivity to difficult storytelling.
  • Ability to pivot quickly and handle fast paced and rapidly evolving projects.
  • Familiarity with the history of the February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks
