Job Description
Congressman Kweisi Mfume (MD-07) seeks an innovative communications leader who can design, produce, and turn around products that respond to the moment. Ability to anticipate problems and offer solutions, and familiarity with Maryland and local news outlets are key. This position is based in D.C. and reports to the Chief of Staff.
The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, is comfortable working under deadlines, is confident interacting with reporters, is highly collaborative and eager to work with staff, and has a passion for storytelling and video production.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Develops and implements media, communications, public relations, and social media strategies;
- Remains abreast of current legislative and non-legislative issues;
- Proactively drafts content in the voice of the Congressman each day in addition to quickly responding to breaking news on Capitol Hill and in the District;
- Manages the Member’s official website;
- Drafts regular commentary and op-eds for local news outlets on important subject matter and current events;
- Creates videos, graphics, and other digital content that is compelling, engaging, on-brand, and error-free;
- Develops and executes press conferences and public events;
- Oversees the creation and distribution of the Congressman’s newsletters and press releases, and produces franked communications;
- Maintains a good working relationship with the Congressman, staff, media, and constituents;
- Works well under pressure and handles stress;
- Accepts performance-based criticism and direction;
- Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights and weekends; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
This is not an entry level position. A bachelor’s degree and 3-4 years of professional communications experience is required. District ties are preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills;
- Strong communication skills;
- Understanding of local and national news outlets;
- Thorough knowledge of the legislative process, procedures and organization of the House; and
- Knowledge of video and graphic editing software and IQ.
