Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Education and Engagement, this position is responsible for developing and overseeing all educational content for a variety of programs housed in the education department. Responsibilities include overseeing the development of the HD Live in Schools educator guides including developing activities suitable for the middle and high school classroom; publishing curriculum and other teacher resources on the Met’s website, commissioning opera arrangements; assisting in the execution and development of the national program; develop an online collection of materials to support Met Opera on Demand - Student Access; and fostering awareness of Met Education offerings among local and national educational organizations. The ideal candidate for this role is a strong collaborator, team player, and mission-driven arts educator with a passionate commitment to build young audiences.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties may be assigned as needed)
- In collaboration with the Director of Education and other education staff, create vision for education curriculum for HD Live in Schools.
- In consultation with the education and marketing teams, select Live in HD titles for the HD Live in School program.
- Writes, edits, and proofreads educational curriculum for selected operas, web copy, funding proposals, and letters as needed. Develop classroom activities for middle and high school classrooms; publish activities on Google Classroom and monitor Google Classroom discussion forums; write copy for illustrated synopses.
- Collaborates with the editorial team and Met Opera Studio designers on creation of all educational collateral including educator guides, classroom materials, illustrated synopses, and conference booklets.
- Develop music curricula for each opera that directly connects to national standards in music and music theory, as well as the AP music theory exam. Develop curricula in other disciplines that connect to the Common Core State Standards, the NYC Blueprint for the Teaching and Learning in the Arts, and the New York Comprehensive Exam in Music.
- Collaboratively plan and produce an annual conference for opera educators, developing conference vision, pedagogical approach, and session topics with presenters. Manage the production of related print materials.
- Commission an annual series of opera arrangements for students, working with Met colleagues to identify appropriate operatic excerpts and coordinating with the composer to develop appropriate works.
- Write copy and commission illustrations for an annual series of Illustrated Synopsis.
- Craft and publish content for the Met’s Education social media channels; work with the Marketing department to adapt Education content for other purposes including social media; work with the Marketing department to coordinate social media messaging.
- Develop an online collection of materials to support and raise awareness of student access to MOoD.
- Manages freelance writers as needed.
- Work in collaboration with the Met Guild to create educational materials for the Access Opera Final Dress rehearsal program.
Education and/or Experience:
- Advanced Degree in Musicology, Music History with emphasis on opera, or relevant experience.
- Classroom teaching experience highly desirable.
- Takes ownership of projects and confidently juggles multiple deadlines and priorities with great initiative and self-motivation
- Has extensive opera knowledge and understands how to talk about the art form to a broad public, from newcomers to knowledgeable opera-goers
