The New York Philharmonic connects with up to 50 million music lovers each season through live concerts in New York and around the world, as well as broadcasts, recordings, and education programs. The 2022–23 season marks a new chapter in the life of America’s longest living orchestra with the opening of the reimagined David Geffen Hall and programming that engages with today’s cultural conversations through explorations of HOME, LIBERATION, SPIRIT, and EARTH, in addition to the premieres of 16 works. This marks the return from the pandemic, when the NY Phil launched NY Phil Bandwagon, presenting free performances across the city, and 2021–22 concerts at other New York City venues.


The New York Philharmonic seeks an experienced human resources leader to serve as the Vice President of People and Culture. The VP of People and Culture provides executive-level guidance on all aspects of the New York Philharmonic’s Human Resource functions. The VP of People and Culture will report to the Executive Director and serve as a member of the senior management team and will work with the organization’s leadership to inform and shape the culture of the organization. The position will set human resources policies and best practices, aligning with the NYPhil’s Vision and Values, and is responsible for implementing long-term strategic talent management and retention goals. The Vice President of People and Culture will also play a leading role in supporting the human resource needs of the NY Phil musicians.


Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all strategic planning and tactical execution of all human resource activities.
  • Serve as a key member of the Senior Management Team, leading cultural transformation through future innovative programs and through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Establish credibility throughout the organization as an effective listener and problem solver with both staff and musicians. 
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to identify ways to support the New York Phil’s Vision and Values and DEI goals through recruitment, talent and performance management, succession planning, employee relations and training.
  • Supervise the HR staff and ensure operational excellence in transactional areas including recruiting, performance management, labor relations, benefits administration, reporting, compensation, and professional development. 
  • Manage and oversee administration of health, dental, vision, disability, workers compensation, pension and 403(b) plans.
  • Partner with New York Phil musicians and staff leadership to ensure that the Phil is providing effective and customized HR support to the musicians.
  • Routinely review the effectiveness of flexible/hybrid workforce and evolve policies, practices and procedures as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations regarding employment, benefits, insurance, and safety.
  • A commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

College degree: advanced degree or law school attendance is desirable with 10+ years of progressive experience as an HR Generalist. Understanding of cultural transformation and what it requires, demonstrated ability to manage a team in a demanding environment. Excellent communications and listening skills with strong emotional intelligence, strong writing skills with the ability to convey messages in a clear, objective voice. Impeccable judgement, with the ability to effectively resolve conflicts, a discreet collaborative personality to interact with a wide variety of people and familiarity with labor and employment agreements. SHRM certification is helpful.
