Term: May 1, 2024 - December 31, 2024


HanVoice, in collaboration with Human Rights Watch, the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Global Rights Compliance, Christian Solidarity Worldwide, and the International Federation for Human Rights, is designing and implementing a community-wide advocacy platform and multiyear advocacy strategy to strengthen international justice and accountability measures in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea).


HanVoice is seeking a Project Lead to drive and coordinate member state and stakeholder engagement to support HanVoice’s advocacy efforts advancing human rights in North Korea in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States, South Korea, and the Netherlands and the Human Rights Council, General Assembly, Security Council, and Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute in Geneva, Switzerland, New York, United States, and The Hague, the Netherlands, respectively.


This position requires a deep commitment to human rights principles, exceptional research skills, and a strategic approach to making a positive impact. The successful candidate will be based in New York, Seoul, or Toronto, but the base location is negotiable, and may have the option to work hybrid or remote. This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer of HanVoice.


THE ORGANIZATION


HanVoice is an international charity based in Canada working to advance human rights in North Korea. HanVoice operationalizes its mission through refugee resettlement, human rights education, and policy development. Since 2020, HanVoice has become a coordinator and hub for nearly 30 organizations working to improve human rights in North Korea. Amongst other efforts over the past 15 years, HanVoice convened global summits in 2010 and 2021; successfully lobbied for a special public policy with the Government of Canada, and is facilitating a historic pilot program that would resettle North Korean escapees in transit through private sponsorship; appeared on over 350 news outlets around the world including The Associated Press, Washington Post, Wall St. Journal, and CBC News; and has testified over 5 times in the House of Commons and Senate of Canada with over 400 minutes of oral testimony and over 20,000 words entered into the parliamentary record.

RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Conduct stakeholder and member state research supporting advocacy in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States, South Korea, and the Netherlands and the Human Rights Council, General Assembly, Security Council, and Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute in Geneva, Switzerland, New York, United States, and The Hague, the Netherlands. 
  • Organize research workshops, roundtables, and panel events in Seoul, South Korea, and New York, United States related to international justice. 
  • Actively support HanVoice’s advocacy efforts to advance international justice and human rights in North Korea at the United Nations.
  • Serve as a liaison with various stakeholders, including member state representatives, United Nations entities, and civil society organizations.
  • Regularly report to the CEO on research progress and findings.
  • Produce well-researched and impactful reports, briefs, and possibly publications, and communicate research findings to internal stakeholders.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE


  • A bachelor's degree in international studies, social science, political science, or a related field, or equivalent work experience, is required.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant work experience is required with a strong preference for those with work experience related to international justice and/or human rights in North Korea.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze complex human rights and international justice and accountability issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey research findings persuasively.
  • Fluency in English with strong preference to those who have fluency in Korean.
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • Emotional intelligence, integrity, humility, and a commitment to transparency, respect, and active listening.
