 Position Summary

The Director is a contributing writer and program manager for SAFE’s Materials team. Responsible for research, analysis, and writing across a variety of policy projects, reports, presentations, and issue briefs. Issues of focus include steel and aluminum supply chains; metals’ economics, markets and trade; and new or innovative technologies impacting domestic production and recycling. The CSIM Director will frequently engage with industry, work with a coalition of other NGOs, and contribute to SAFE’s external communications.


 Responsibilities

Director responsibilities include but are not limited to:


1. Research and analysis: Conduct research; produce and edit Materials Center publications on a variety of topics; execute grant deliverables; collect and analyze data to observe and interpret metals’ production, energy uses and market trends.


2. Policy development: Contribute to the development of SAFE policy recommendations designed to strengthen the case for revitalizing domestic materials production and enhancing the flexibility and robustness of domestic energy markets consistent with the organization’s mission.


3. Communications: Contribute to the development of presentations, talking points, and other materials designed to increase SAFE’s public profile. Provide analysis and guidance to SAFE staff on policy issues.


4. Organization representation: Participate in external events as a representative of SAFE and the Materials Center and build relationships with industry and government stakeholders.


Professional Skills and Qualifications


Knowledge & Experience:


  • 8-10 years of experience with manufacturing and energy policy.
  • Professional experience involving research, analysis, and writing on policy issues in the manufacturing, energy and trade paradigm.
  • Experience writing and publishing articles aimed at a policy audience.
  • Experience working with stakeholders, including government officials, military officers, and business leaders.


 Skills & Abilities:


  • Exceptional writing skills with the ability to synthesize information and conduct research.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, including the ability to communicate complex information clearly and concisely. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively work with outside stakeholders.
  • A proven ability to work both as a member of a team on collaborative projects and as an independent writer and researcher.
  • A clear interest in the mission of SAFE.


 Education:


· Bachelor’s degree required.


· Master’s degree or extensive relevant equivalent experience preferred.


 Salary/Benefits


The opportunity garners a competitive salary in the $125,000-140,000 range and a comprehensive benefits package. SAFE provides a generous health benefits package covering up to 100% of premiums for employees and their families, 401K with 3% employer contribution and life insurance, as well as other benefits to be detailed in the offer. The individual will be based in Washington, D.C.
