Job Description
About Us:
SeedAI is a high-impact, low-bureaucracy policy nonprofit on a mission to make sure that artificial intelligence benefits all Americans. This ranges from making AI skills more accessible, building regional AI capacity, creating the infrastructure to conduct meaningful AI research at scale, and bringing scientific discovery to the forefront of AI policy conversations in Washington, D.C. Our team collaborates with policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to tackle the policy challenges that AI’s rapid growth brings—while staying sharp and adaptive as the landscape changes.
About the Role:
As a Policy Fellow, you’ll be in the weeds (and sometimes up in the clouds) helping drive meaningful change in how AI policy is understood, designed, and implemented. Reporting directly to our Policy Director, Josh New, you’ll be expected to keep pace, keep questioning, take initiative, and dive headfirst into complex issues. If the idea of finding elegant solutions or compelling copy for messy, high-stakes challenges carries appeal, keep reading.
Responsibilities:
- Research and Analysis: Deep-dive into policy issues around scientific discovery, AI ethics, AI safety, data governance, intellectual property, and economic implications. You’ll be the boots-on-the-ground source of insights that guide our policy direction.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Our team builds bridges between academia, industry, government, and advocacy groups. You’ll support the Policy Director in managing these relationships and bring fresh ideas for collaborations and public dialogues.
- Policy Development and Documentation: Develop briefs, reports, and recommendations that frame AI issues with both nuance and clarity. Be prepared to draft, debate, and defend your insights.
- Event and Program Coordination: Participate in and help organize policy roundtables, workshops, and maybe even a few thought-provoking panels. This is where your ideas might become talking points for some of the best minds in AI.
Who You Are:
- Curious and Relentless: You’re not just curious about AI and public policy—you’re relentless in chasing clarity and actionable solutions within it.
- Analytical by Nature: You can parse complex, technical information and frame it with relevance and accessibility for non-expert audiences.
- A Strong Communicator: You’ve got a way with words, both written and spoken, that makes policy feel understandable and engaging, even urgent.
- Unafraid to Challenge Ideas: You question assumptions (your own and others) and are comfortable with debate, iteration, and constructive pushback.
Qualifications:
- Graduate degree (or close to it) in public policy, law, technology, or a related field. 5+ years of political and policy experience with writing responsibilities if no education background.
- Demonstrated understanding of, or experience in, tech policy or policy of an AI-impacted field.
- Proven research, analysis, writing, and presentation skills.
- Ability to commit to a full-time fellowship of at least four months, with options to extend up to a year.
What We Offer:
- Immediate Impact: Your work will actively shape our policy recommendations and public engagements. You will also get to publish under your name.
- Mentorship with Industry Insight: Direct guidance from our Policy Director, Josh New, who is well-versed in the AI policy and advocacy space.
- A Seat at the Table (building a network): You’ll engage directly with stakeholders, from academics to policymakers, adding your voice to some of the most pressing conversations in tech policy.
- Flexible Term: This fellowship is adaptable, running from four months to a year, based on your goals and our needs.
If you’re ready to bring intellectual rigor, a proactive approach, and a true curiosity to the challenge of building inclusive AI policy, we’d love to meet you. Apply today to be part of SeedAI's mission to shape a tech landscape that serves everyone, not just the well-connected.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. This position includes a stipend. Expected start date is within the following two to four weeks. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
