Job Title: Coordinator, Communications
Department: Communications
Reports to: Director, Communications
Manages: 3 seasonal interns (and assists the Coordinator, South Bay Lakers)
Position Summary: The Communications Coordinator is a critical role for the Los Angeles Lakers organization, serving as the primary organizer and facilitator of communications assets to local, national and international media. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring a season-long seamless, effective and efficient experience for journalists, broadcasters and communications staff from visiting teams and the NBA. The primary focus for this role is flawless pre-game and on-site planning and coordination of 40+ Lakers home games and virtual communications coordination for 40+ road games. Additionally, this role supports day-to-day Lakers communications activities including, writing press releases, researching and collating media contacts, supporting media events and developing communications materials.
Essential Functions (Duties & Responsibilities**):

Game Day Coordination
  • Oversee and coordinate season-long media credentialing process across local, national and international media, working with team communications staff and the league to review and approve tiers and access
  • Receive, track, compile and monitor single game media credential requests and create and disseminate credentials for each game
  • Manage home game media logistics, arrivals and check in, including writing and distributing the Gameday Information schedule and email, staffing the media entrance, collating and posting seating and photo charts, distributing game notes and other media-ready statistical information and capturing and circulating pre-game and post-game audio from coaches and players
  • Support hosting and servicing media throughout the game, staffing the Chick Hearn Press Room, managing media inquiries and providing requested information

PR Publication Production
  • Assist in the researching, writing and editing of department publications and information, including the annual media guide, game notes, bios, rosters, media advisories and press releases on a variety of topics and updates
  • Coordinate production logistics of publications, ensuring the highest standards of creation and presentation

Day-to-Day Media Support
  • Support media and broadcast interview requests for players, coaches and front office staff, as assigned, including for team practice, shootaround
  • Service beat writers and Spectrum SportsNet with stats and information throughout the year
  • Research, plan and support logistics for small and large-scale media events including signage, scheduling, run of show, production, invitations, spokesperson preparation and more
  • Oversee and implement daily media monitoring to share relevant news clips with the Lakers organization

Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as media’s main public relations contact for Lakers Summer League, producing the Summer League Media Guide, managing roster updates, player bios, media requests and media availability
  • Provide on-site media relations and communications support for Lakers events supporting community initiatives, business updates, sponsorship activations and more
  • Assist in hiring three seasonal interns at the beginning of each season, overseeing their onboarding and training to ensure seamless integration and a productive experience for media stakeholders
  • Provide administrative and clerical support to team leadership, as assigned
  • Miscellaneous other tasks and special projects, as needed and assigned

**Responsibilities subject to change based on organizational needs and direction from management.
Education (Required/ Preferred): Bachelor’s degree (required) in Communications/ Journalism/ PR (preferred) or related field
Previous experience: A minimum of two applicable internships and/or in-field experience working in communications, public relations, media relations or sports
Technology Capabilities:
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign and the ability to create and publish
  • Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint & Windows)
Skills, abilities and knowledge:
  • Detail oriented, self-starter with interest to learn in a fast-paced, high-profile, dynamic environment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and elevated standards to plan and execute logistics and experiences flawlessly
  • Excellent writing skills with an eye for grammar, spelling, thoughtful story creation and AP style
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels of the team and league
  • Ability and interest to operate at the speed of the 24-hr news cycle
  • Proven experience successfully coordinating rapid response efforts
  • On-scene problem solving ability to make tough, quality decisions in a fast-paced and high-stress environment
  • Knowledge and interest in editorial media and the changing journalism landscape
  • Sound judgement and utmost professionalism to publicly represent a premium legacy brand and organization
  • Strong presentation and public engagement skills

  • Knowledge and passion of Lakers team and history, basketball and professional sports
Physical Demands: Ability to lift 25 lbs. and a significant amount of walking on game day
Location: El Segundo (offices and training center M-F and some weekends), downtown Los Angeles (Crypto.com Arena for Laker home games), summer league away games, other occasional off-site events
Travel: Potential minimal travel for away games or off-season events, as assigned

The pay range for this role is $20.00/hour to $22/hour. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience and certifications
