Position Focus:

The Associate Communications Officer will work with the leadership team across the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Dermatology to develop and produce strategic content promoting their research, education, and clinical programs and services to internal and external audiences. Reporting to the lead departmental communication officer, this individual will play an integral role in increasing the visibility of Yale’s nationally ranked and top-rated neurology, neurosurgery, and dermatology programs and in fostering positive faculty, staff, and trainee relations.

More specifically, the role will help develop, coordinate, and implement a communications strategy for the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Dermatology. Duties include but are not limited to: maintaining the neurology, neurosurgery, and dermatology websites and digital and social media platforms with new content; preparing articles and images for the content management system; copy editing and proofreading; and writing short articles and announcements.

Essential Duties

1. Develops and manages forward-looking strategic communications with video and social media to enhance Yale’s reputation and communicate Yale’s messages.2. Produces multimedia content. Identify topics with compelling visual and audio elements to create stories that exploit those qualities, using video, podcasts, infographics, slideshows and other media as appropriate.3. Works with communications colleagues throughout the school and university to highlight the work of researchers, create a high profile presence, and reach new audiences.4. Builds relationships with faculty, administrators, departments and students and maintains contact with communications professionals and monitors trending news topics.5. Conceptualizes and writes creative posts across all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other accounts.6. Participates in regular editorial/content meetings. Propose story ideas to senior leadership.7. Regularly attends scientific talks on diverse topics to stay up-to-date on research trends at Yale and beyond.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and minimum of two years of experience in writing, social media, digital journalism (e.g., video, audio blogging, etc.) or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Independent self-starter with outstanding written (editing/writing), verbal, and organizational skills and ability to develop interesting content suitable for web and non-web-based distribution, including annual reports.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Proficiency with web/intranet content management systems and HTML editing tools, social media platforms (including Brandwatch), survey building tools, Microsoft Office Suite, Canva (or other image creating/editing software), and electronic mailing list software applications (Listserv).

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Familiarity with desktop publishing and layout programs such as Adobe’s Creative Suite and ability to identify and learn new technology, including Yale School of Medicine’s content management platform, Beatrix.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Significant demonstrated ability with, or very strong interest in science and medicine content. Knowledge in developing, disseminating, and maintaining web content, and in gathering and extracting from analytics to inform content decisions.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Ability to develop relationships with faculty and other departmental stakeholders to develop content for distribution and manage the department’s website and social media platforms.
