Why us, why now?

The AAMC Research and Action Institute takes a unique approach to health policy issues with straightforward, nonpartisan, practical approaches, utilizing the expertise of the AAMC staff, its members, policy experts, and other stakeholders.
While the AAMC has a long history of successful policy and advocacy, the institute aims to take an independent but informed approach to discussing policy challenges and offer solutions to the most intractable problems affecting health and health care. The institute helps policymakers and the public understand, navigate, and improve American health care using short analyses and issue briefs as well as longer, traditional think tank reports.
This position within the Research and Action Institute supports the development of publications by researching, writing, organizing, and editing information for a variety of audiences. The Communications and Policy Specialist will develop an understanding of important health policy topics by collecting and compiling information or data, searching references, preparing drafts, constructing bibliographies, and assisting in analyzing results. Writing includes formal publications such as issue briefs, reports, and articles, as well as less formal content, including web content, PowerPoint presentations, and social media posts. The role includes updating and maintaining the Research and Action Institute's webpages.
In order to prepare drafts, the Communications and Policy Specialist will understand the implications of a wide range of policy issues, answer research questions to further explore topic areas, and apply potential solutions to a wide range of health care issues, under the guidance of more senior staff. The position will also provide project coordination to the Research and Action Institute, including gathering and organizing documentation and assisting with status reporting. This position will work as a highly collaborative team member, partnering with subject matter experts across the organization, and working on matrixed teams.
